  • You can do it with ffmpeg (CLI) and I can give you the incantation for that if you want, but the IA's transcoding pipeline should really do it automatically and I'm surprised if it doesn't do it already. I wonder if it's supposed to and something is going wrong. I assume you used .mkv extension and still got that error. So that sounds like a bug. Otherwise, try renaming the file and re-uploading.

    If it's a bug, you could try contacting the IA and asking what's up. They do read the emails they get, though obviously a software fix is likely to take a while if they pursue it. https://archive.org/about/contact

    No I wouldn't. I liked his early stuff but haven't had any interest in ASOIAF or other infinite series that show no signs of converging.

    More srsly by the 1990s we were about as internet addicted as we are now. There just weren't smartphones, so you were offline when you went out of the house away from your computer. You usually did have a voice cell phone, initially analog (AMPS) but later digital with SMS messages. Also, when you were online, the web didn't suck as badly as it does now. There was less bandwidth for megabytes of javascript bloat, etc.

  • There is no training required to buy guns in CA. You have to get a firearm safety certificate (FSC), which requires passing a multiple choice test, but no training. I haven't seen this test myself (I'm not a gun person) but I've heard it described as basically trivial, that anyone with some common sense could pass it with no study whatsoever. That sounds much easier than the multiple choice test for a drivers license, which millions of people have passed with no formal training. It does (for real) require some study, but you read the DMV drivers' license booklet, take a few online practice tests, get mom or dad or another driver to explain anything that confuses you, and take the test multiple times if you don't pass on the first try.

    Training (16 hours of professional instruction iirc) is required to get a concealed carry permit in my county, but that's a different level than just buying guns. I think other counties just give you the permit if you don't have obvious issues preventing them.

  • Insurance is (partly) in case you have a huge expense, exceeding the amount you could save. Like getting hit by a bus could mean millions in expenses. Insurance spreads that risk around. Unfortunately it's dysfunctional in many ways, but that's separate.

  • You find out about the case before jury selection. Voir dire probes for possible biases you might have about the case and the defendant so they have to tell you about the charges. The case I got released from recently was about a non-fatal knife attack.

    The big fines and stuff are, I think, usually not imposed unless you get in their face about refusing. I missed a summons once and said oops, my bad. They said fine, we'll send you another one.

    I think I've gone 5 or so times and only made it to voir dire once. Maybe that says they send more summons than they really have to.

  • Sometimes the parts are glued to the board at the factory and start vibrating later if the glue comes loose. Silicon carne is an ok fix in that situation, I think. I guess sometimes the parts themselves are faulty. This isn't really my area.

    An 8gb pi 4 is around $160 now, ouch.

    Added: sometimes you can put a blob of silicone sealant over the vibrating component, to dampen the vibration. Lots of consumer electronics already has that. If you watch any AvE youtubes, he likes to call the stuff "silicon carne".
