    Sorry but they are liars. The only truly degoogled android OSs are GrapheneOS and the experimental mobile linux ones.

    I really wish these alternative OSs were more truthful in how they portray themselves. They might not be terrible options for certain people and they might have good intentions but the dishonesty really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There are so many who are misled.

It kinda makes sense that people are irrationally attached to them given how they've forcibly become dependent on cars for their entire lives for the most basic shit. It has got to be one of the most successful examples of corporate propaganda out there.

    Don't have to imagine. They fucking do. And 90% don't stop at stop signs. And many park illegally. And 99% of cars don't obey the speed limit. Despite the fact that cars kill millions annually, traffic laws are not enforced and disobeying them is normalized. People on bikes are not the problem here.

  • You can't really claim this without head to head trials comparing antidepressants with vitamin supplementation. There are too many variables that could differ between studies for it to be meaningful. The author also neglected to mention that the largest trial to date (VITAL-DEP) showed no difference over 5.3 years in depression with 2000 IU/day vitamin D supppementation. So while there may be something to this, more research is definitely needed.

    I will put in a plug for iron deficiency as a contributor to depression though, which has much stronger evidence behind it. The medical community is just starting to come to grips with just how common it is, particularly in younger women.

  • Unfortunately I don't know of any brands that sell non-IoT dry food feeders that have RFID/microchip recognition. My kitties are geriatric and require different prescription foods. Fortunately I bought a model that doesn't have mic/camera, they're on an isolated network, and I have network wide ad/tracker blocking. But I'd be open to alternatives if you know of any.

    Based on your other comments, your proposed solution to iPhones is Fairphones and Shiftphones, which are not only more expensive than lower-end iPhones, but also typically only available in Europe.

    It is though, precisely because, as you say, there are many many sub-companies for nestle and coca cola. They are near-monopolies owning large swaths of products making it difficult to identify alternatives, and once you identify true alternatives, you have to determine whether those alternatives are really "more ethical" whatever that means. It's truly a waste of time.

    Boycotts are different because the demands are clearly vocalized and efforts are coordinated, making for a bigger impact. There's also the carrot of "if you do xyz specific actionable thing, we will come back and start buying your products again." Boycotts also don't require the same level of time consuming scrutiny on an individual level. You look at the list of brands and you avoid those brands. Easy.

  • "voting with your wallet" in the way it's usually meant does not and has never worked and puts the burden on individuals to invest an inordinate amount of time and research for typically minimal returns like "support potentially slightly less bad company B instead of slightly worse company A." Voting with your wallet also shames those who don't have the financial resources to feasibly pay for "more ethical" things, which are typically also more expensive.

    Your time is far better spent on higher yield things. For example, boycotting, meaning organized movements with specific demands, does move the needle. Using directly democratic levers to push forward policy when available, such as state ballot proposals in the US, works. Replacing products from companies in your life with community made things (like lemmy), which I view as a form of prefiguration, works. Labor movements like general strikes to push policy forward works. These things actually bring people together and are worth their time investment, unlike "voting with your wallet."

  • Phreeli is overpriced and doesn't actually grant much privacy despite their claims. Telecom providers can still have a field day with your location and sms/call data even if Phreeli isn't collecting that themselves, which is also really just a pinky promise at this point. There are also competing services already which don't require PII either but have more reasonable prices.

    If you want a phone number just to sign up for signal or something just use jmp.chat smspool or mysudo depending on your needs.
