  • Fun fact, Dryden from AAF is a documented racist and bigot. He was called out in the NME (or maybe MM, I forget) at the height of their fame by a journalist who followed them on tour and saw him frequently using racial slurs to refer to members of the road crew. Then when social media started being a thing, he was on there with (subsequently deleted) N-words and homophobia.

  • Because this isn’t supposed to be repository of knowledge, it’s a social place for humans to talk to other humans. You might think it helped with a specific question, but long term you’re poisoning the well, and setting a norm where trust is eroded even further.

    The fact that you didn’t initially flag it up as being a clanker until you were called on it shows that you know deep down that it’s not classy.

    Deploying a low-effort AI to provide “balance” to Lemmy is not your responsibility, and not something anyone would vote for if given the option. AI output is like farts; people only like the smell of their own. If you couldn’t bothered writing it, then how disrespectful is it to waste other people’s time expecting them to read it?

    So I repeat: cut it out, nobody wants Lemmy to be a place where you ask a question and some lazy-ass meat proxy who lacks the intellect or patience to do their own writing, passes it over to an LLM.

  • I wouldn’t expect Americans to know who he is, but some of the threads when Better Man came out were fucking weird. A lot of people seemed actually pissed off at the notion that someone they hadn’t heard of would get a biopic, as though he needed America’s permission

  • One of the many reasons is likely to make sure models stay specifically optimized for NVidia hardware, by floating them to the top of the search results and making sure that they're the only ones that get special prices on the tools and hosting. It's such a fast-moving industry that they know they won't always have the fastest chips indefinitely.

  • seconded, they charge $21/month/seat if you're using the pro features; that's $50k a year even for a smallish team of 20, just to use their website. Once you get to a bigger company with 800 seats, that's $1M over 5 years, for something that was mostly built on free OSS software to begin with.

    Not to mention the biggest bait-and-switch in history that they pulled off on Github Copilot subscriptions, that I'm guessing a lot of big orgs won't have cancelled yet. They really are laughing all the way to the bank.

  • I'm morbidly curious about the engineers Musk hires, because overwhelmingly the most intelligent engineers and scientists I know wouldn't dream of applying to work at one of his companies. Even the ones that don't care about the Nazi shit have still read the many reports about how badly he treats his staff.

    Obviously I don't have access to their statistics, but just from looking at it I think most of the higher quality posters have either given up on it or been drowned out by bots.

    Those are reasonable use cases, but they're not the ones companies like Apple were ever doing research into. Pretty much every major advancement in professional applications for VR was done in academia.

  • By the same token, AR is no longer new technology. Every AR app I've ever had on my phone got used a couple of times at the start, and have since been auto-offloaded from disuse. There might be some edge case stuff relating to accessibility tools, but companies like Apple weren't the ones leading research into those in the first place.

    In fact now I come to think of it, the most successful AR app I'm aware of is Pokemon Go...
