"There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves." - Mark Twain

  • They were in my highschool english class. They sat next to me during a socratic seminar and was reading a very thick book about medieval torture methods. It was also halloween and they were wearing scary clown makeup. I had already been crushing on them since the school year had started but this was the cherry on top. We've been together 6 years now.

Our beloved cat was found as a kitten with a broken leg in a grocery store parking lot. My partner's sister found her but couldn't keep her because she already had quite a few cats. She knew we were already considering getting a cat so she brought her over to meet us. Genuinely love at first sight. Her name is Bean and she is the most precious little baby.

  • Honestly off to a bad start. I have to get up in 3.5hrs and I am not at all tired

  • Not yet

  • Surely the original timeline wasn't worse than this?

  • As god intended

  • I was a physics student for some time (got to quantum and realized it was not for me lol) and one of the smartest, most hardworking students I ever met was a 27 year old who had been in and out of rehab since he was 18. He is working on his masters now.

  • No but it could be far far worse

  • programming is dead

I was really tired of it anyway

  • I enjoy the deprogram because it's mostly lighthearted but the discussions generally revolve around radical politics. The members are an American communist propagandist, A Serb who experienced the destruction of Yugoslavia, and an Iraqi doctor who experienced being Iraqi in 2003. Its an interesting mix of perspectives and they are charismatic/entertaining people. They sometimes have guests on the show for when they want to discuss topics they don't have experience with. Solid 8/10 podcast

  • Oh my god is that why I have been so gassy?!?! Are chickpeas known for that? I was fucking wondering.

  • It isn't super fast because dried beans need to soak but buying beans and rice in bulk is huge. I also recommend making roasted chickpeas, I use a premade indian spice mix for chana masala on mine and it is delicious. Just soak, boil, coat in olive oil, season, and roast at 350-375 for 30-35 minutes. Tons of calories for very cheap and high protein. Only major drawback is that you can't roast chickpeas in bulk because their texture changes significantly after cooling.

  • Establish or join mutual aid networks and learn practical skills like gardening, sewing, or mechanics. Ideally don't live in a city (assuming total trade collapse)

  • Its an acutely exploitative labor relation that should be heavily regulated within a capitalist system in order to reduce the amount of abuse the people engaging in it experience. Ideally I want a system where no one feels a need to sell their body for a living. No one should be coerced into sexual relations.

  • Should I have?

  • Alas, our chains are not so easily broken. Even the idea of doing so begets violent suppression. I wish it were possible but the last guy who accomplished a socialist state through electoralism got bombed and replaced by a fascist.
