  • Im imagining some of my house mates over the years and the inconsiderate nature in which they closed doors in the middle of the night. It'd be nice if that didn't have to be a concern. No idea what could be done, but so many nights it effected my sleep. Its my biggest pet peeve.

  • Kind of feels like I'm beating off a dead horse when I talk about cooperatives, but multi stakeholder models can solve a lot of the issues with publicly traded stocks. Namely the perverse incentive to appease shareholders over workers or consumers. At least give workers majority stake, so they can install their own board of directors instead of all the voting power unfairly given to the sociopaths with the most money.

    I'm all for getting rid of it completely though.

    I'm partial to a Cooperative Economy, a form of stateless market socialism, in conjunction with something like the Economy for the Common Good as an alternative to GDP, a measure for economic growth, and can be used for the purpose of determining tax brackets and providing subsidies for example. Implementing the right incentives to make the transition could begin to provide a significant break from capitalism.

  • This is why I'm an advocate of stateless market socialism via cooperatives. Theyre tried and true, and who doesn't want their workplaces democratically controlled? Multi stakeholder models don't have to mess with your retirement or university endowments. I believe it is the requisite to dismantling capitalism.

  • Its a conservative supreme court, you don't have to be a single issue voter. Progressive candidates can try to make promises to get elected, but no ones going to be able to take your guns away. Even a progressive court wouldn't be able to do that much. A law for background checks or waiting periods on purchases might be upheld by a progressive court, but the right ultimately won't be infringed.

  • Not op, but I always thought this was fun. For any continuous quantity, (eg temperature, humidity, barometric pressure), there's always two points on opposite ends (antipodal points) of earth with the exact same value. Its useless because there's no way to know where these points are, it assumes a perfect sphere, and apparently these quanities aren't exactly always continuous. Its the Borsuk-Ulam theorem from topology and extends to higher dimensions. It can be proven pretty easily on a circle with basic calculus.

  • Well on my county's recycling website it literally says the cap cannot be recycled and must be removed and thrown in the trash. Im certain this was the case the last place I lived too.

    If the EU has recycling centers that can process them together that's great and the law makes sense.

    Not sure what needs to change aside from heavily limiting the production of plastic, but recycling has basically always been bullshit. One small win for plastic bottles in the EU doesn't solve the larger issue of every other mixed material or dirty plastic container that ultimately ends up in a landfill.

    How many people clean and dry everything they recycle? How many people separate different plastics, mixed material items, or remove recyclable parts from things they throw away? So much of what can be recycled doesn't get recycled.

    Looks like less than 10% of what can be recycled gets recycled, and up to 30% of what ends up in a recycling centers is trashed anyway. It should never have been the consumers responsibility. Wish people would stop buying this crap.

  • As I understood it, the bottle caps are too small to be recycled seperately. They can't be processed together with the bottle, and get tossed anyway. If attached, there's a good possibility none of it gets recycled.

    Just looked it up, depends on your local region. Mine requires caps be removed, and bottle rinsed and flattened.
