  • While I wouldn't accuse him of having the intelligence to make a "calculated move" -- he has an extensive history of making decisions based on how it might make him look in the eyes of his suckers naive gamers. If you remember the beginning of his beef with Google and Apple -- Epic prepared an entire 80-page lawsuit and an animated short film before intentionally breaking ToS, positioning themselves as the messiah that will save the gamers from the evil corporations.

    He obviously has something to gain from voicing a dissenting opinion. Remain skeptical, question everything.

  • I currently run Nextcloud inside a Debian 11 LXC container on Proxmox, together with Apache, Mariadb, and PHP. I followed this guide. Once Apache and PHP were running, the rest of the process was straightforward.

  • aplay doesn't bitch about encodings or signatures or checksums or something not looking like a media file. If you do something stupid (like pipe an executable file into it), it won't tell you to go back to the child-safe play pen, it will pass the data to ALSA and do its best to render it as sound.

    The Windows mind can't comprehend the importance of the freedom to fuck around. But, looking at your comment history, you're more of a professional contrarian and won't even try to do that.

  • You mean a service that translates between ActivityPub and another API? I'm pretty sure that's just a bridge.

    As for the challenges:

    • It would have to be maintained constantly.
    • It would have to be updated to reflect changes to an API in a timely manner.
    • It would need to handle different versions of APIs (goodness knows even Lemmy instance operators have trouble with that).
    • It would need to handle features that don't translate one-to-one between instances.
    • It would have to be transparent enough to allow a non-technical user to use it, but opaque enough that a non-technical user doesn't blame issues with the bridge on the connected services (see for example: the Bottles packaging kerfuffle).
    • ...and so on. Lots of challenges.

  • I remember a meme years ago that described how the type, color, number, and arrangement of flowers in a bouquet could be used to convey complex messages. I'll have to scroll through my hoard, but I'll post it if I find it.

    But, honestly, as long as there exists a code that is shared between dissenters, and ways to represent discrete elements of that code, communication itself is easy. You could encode anything in a medium that can represent a binary state, like lining up shiny pebbles on your windowsill: two close to each other for a binary 1, or a single one for binary 0. Or you could represent messages by how you hang your laundry to dry. Or embed it into how you play a musical instrument. You could hang Christmas ornaments in your window and use any obvious property to represent a message. You could use a rudimentary radio transmitter to send messages through radio noise. The options are limitless.

    The difficult part is maintaining operational security. The limitations presented by human mental capabilities means that a very simple pre-shared secret must be used, which may be leaked or deduced. You have to know where to look, how to decode or decrypt the message, how to respond, and how to do all of that covertly. Prisoners have successfully used hand motions while cleaning their cell window to convey messages outside, apparently for years before authorities caught on.

It's obviously not a third of the userbase, or even the recently active ones, but whenever the topic of moderation comes up, there's always a vocal portion of commenters (mostly of the ML persuasion) complaining about the violation of free speech as they (mis)understand it. It's been like this ever since Lemmygrad and Hexbear were defederated and piracy@dbzero was blocked instance-wide.

    And they didn't. It continues happening in real time, and the value gap between Mastodon and Bluesky, from the average social media user's perspective, continues to grow. Thinking that a handful of libre-minded people can change that is wishful thinking bordering on delusion.

    1. That was part of the reason. I tried explaining Pixelfed to my photographer dad and he completely lost interest when I mentioned instances and equated them to e-mail providers. Non-technical people don't like having to understand a technical aspect, and the nature of federation can't be avoided.
    2. Keep in mind that these are the people who stayed on Twitter after it was infested by the musk. They're leaving because it's turned into a dogshit service, not because of any kind of moral stance. They won't choose one service over another because it's libre or decentralized or community-operated. They'll flock to one that has a low entry barrier and high population.
    3. Speaking of which: Bluesky is where the people are. The merits of a social media provider are worthless if it has a fraction of the population of a direct competitor.

    I use an older APC Back-UPS 500 to power my homelab and all network devices. So far it's saved me from 3 power outages, and can last about 30 minutes with a 50W power draw. It doesn't have data connections of its own (newer devices do), so I had to improvise with an ESP32 board that reports if it detects a voltage on the beeper, plus some cron jobs on Proxmox.

  • I simply use Nextcloud to sync the vault directory. It has clients for both desktop and mobile and works perfectly fine. I use it to sync basically everything between my work, home, laptop, and mobile.

    The only drawback is that I don't know if Obsidian automatically reloads a file if it is changed - if not, and you leave the file open in the editor, you might accidentally overwrite the new file with old data.
