And on top of all this does he think we just send astronauts up to space to live in the ISS for extended periods of time all willy nilly? Or hell just sending people to the moon, that was just "ok, you're going to to the moon tomorrow, pack your bags" no. It takes months if not years of training to get someone used to living in zero g for extended periods of time. Us silly meatbags need something called gravity to live. You can't just shoot someone out into space and say "have at it". So whose going to train these millions of people? There's no artificial gravity spinny things on ships to do that. there's hardly any on the moon.
And then what if these people want to go back to Earth for a visit? it wouldn't work. Look at Astronauts who have been on the ISS for an extended period of time when they come back. They can't walk, they look like they're going to pass out. So everytime these millions of people decide to return for a visit they also have to spend time getting help to get used to being on Earth again? no way, that's not happening. You would literally have to set up some sort of hospitals specifically for this and then train and hire a massive amount of people who deal only with getting people used to dealing with gravity again. 2045? be real jeffy boy.
I mean again the people who are floating around in space right now are specifically selected and are in peak physical condition. The ONLY way it would maybe work is if we managed to develop a form of artifical gravity and right now that's science fiction. OR you set up a colony on Mars and right now that's a one way trip. and I've seen/read/played a lot of media where one way mars colony trips never work out well in the long run.

I just use borg on a timer. I can set it on my various machines via a shell script or on my NixOS machine in the config. I have it backup stuff daily at the same time, have automatically remove old backups after a certain period of time, and I can easily mount it to whatever computer using an alias. I don't think about it, just does it, easy peasy.

Just this morning I asked claude a very basic question, it halucinated the answer 3 times in a row. zero correct solution. first answer It halucinated what a certain cli daemon does, second solution it provided an alternative that it literally halucinated, the thing didn't exist at all, third solution it halucinated how another application works as well as the git repo for said application (A. doesn't even do the the thing Claude describe and B. the repo it provided had NOTHING to do with the application it described) I just gave up and went to my searx and found the answer myself. I shouldn't have been so lazy.

Money's gone. Even if companies WANTED and COULD bring back full time devs it's an impossible task of their own creation. I have clients that leveraged AI for end to end builds and it didn't work, they now know it didn't work, and are scrambling to find devs but they can't. Not because said devs don't exist, they do in droves. They can't because of the shit of their own creation. AI. They can put out an ad for a senior dev and they'll get slammed with literally thousands of resumes, a good majority of which are AI created/submitted. So now they have to weed through thousands of resumes to find an ACTUAL living breathing individual who ACTUALLY knows and can do what they claim because another good majority of resumes are from people who zero qualifications who lie or are over seas. So they don't bother and hope the ship will right itself or the junior dev they have on staff suddenly gets good.
What's going to happen is many companies are going to shut down. it's way past the point of no return for them. They'll pay for consultants and freelancers like myself to try and patch the holes in said ships and hope they make it to land before it sinks. They'll try to make as much money for investors and upper level managers before shit hits the fan.
All I can suggest for developers that are still unemployed is to pivot to code review. try to get hired as a consultant for that and work your damn asses off to make as much money as you can NOW before there's nothing left to code review. That's what I'm doing.
It'd be one thing if the projects being supported were good and lead by devs with questionable ideals but I'm more upset that Framework decided to support a couple of really shitty projects lead by shitty people. I mean one dudes dotfiles and anothers very buggy WM that you can pay $5 to get "premium" for it? Cool Framework, that doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence in what YOU produce now.

That's a really piss poor excuse though. It'd be one thing if it was "I like Hyprland, I'll support that" but then it's also "I also like Omarchy" annnnd now you're starting a trend that isn't a great on to start. THEN you have people in the know who see this trend and being to put two and two together.
Saying that Framework is tiny with no PR is no excuse. It takes all of a few minutes to discover what kind of piece of shit DHH is and what kind of bullshit the devs/mods over on Hyprland spew out. I mean I've been a developer for 20+ years now and I knew DHH was a piece of shit years ago. Hell anyone that's spent any time with Ruby knew he was a piece of shit years ago.
honestly if you had a bit of extra money on you that you wanted to donate to a charity you would utilize your common sense and research said charity before donating money right? I would hope so. I hope a lot of people would. That's what I do. I'm not going to throw money at some random charity then I later find out uses kittens as toilet paper.
So Framework coming out and saying "yeah we like to support open source projects, sure the ones we support are lead by racist homo/transphobes and a guy that thought Hitler had some neat ideas, no we're not going to discuss it" is not a great look.
I don't use Hyprland (honestly it's still a buggy mess and the $5 a month for "hyprland premium" is a joke), I won't ever use Omarchy (I already know how to install Arch), and I guess I just won't use Framework anymore. That's it.
If other people want to use that crap and support it? sure, have at it. I won't lose sleep over it. I would much rather people stop hailing these things as the greatest achievements in FOSS and Linux when they're clearly not. I mean christ on a cracker people are treating Omarchy like it's the second coming and it's just an Arch installer with hyprland, a bunch of cherry picked applications and a fancy TUI styler. that's it.
Oh wait, sorry, Omarchy also has a hyrpland keybind set to open X/Twitter for you....groundbreaking.

Guix is fine. Some people complain about the "speed" of it and some people who want to game say it's a no go. I haven't played around much with it myself so I can't speak on it first hand so YMMV.
flakes, in the most basic terms, is a solution to "well it works on my machine".
So say you develop something within a flake, you can then take that flake and reproduce it 100% on whatever machine you choose. so what ever your building in it if it worked on your machine, it's going to work on all machines.
It's also good for configuring your NixOS. your configs are within the flake and if something happens to your system or you want to replicate your system completely on another machine you can. i.e. you push your nixos config to a git repo and then you can clone it where ever and now you have your complete OS setup somewhere else. Like say if your system borks and you need to reinstall Arch or Ubuntu or whatever it will take awhile to get it set up completely has you had it before. With NixOS and Flakes it's like 10minutes tops to get back to where you were.

I mean hell we used to do this way back in the day with IRC and Quake servers. it's not hard at all and you don't need to over think it. I mean it's not like the thing is going to crash often so I'm not sure why you want to spread it out. I generally reboot my server like once a month and it takes all of 5min.
Depending on the game and the type of chat server you're looking to run I don't think you need to over think it. Just start out with like a VPS, see how it goes, maybe switch it up to a dedicated. neither are expensive.
I've been doing this for well over 20 years now and I taught myself by building Geocities sites and random stuff.
Just build things and push them to a repo. Have an idea for something? build it. could just be something like a TUI for Mastodon or like an eReader with AI driven text to speech, I don't know i'm just spit balling here but my point is you just have to build stuff. It's like anything, the more you do it, the better you get at it. Like drawing. you just draw something every day and eventually you get good. it's the same for coding. just work on something every day and you'll get good at it.
So just build something or contribute to your favourite open source project.

trying it out now on NixOS. it's buggy. VERY buggy just a word of warning but it is VERY early alpha. Can't really do much with it right. Font issues, command window not popping up, etc. Promising though. would love to have something like qutebrowser but with decent ad blocking.
