  • curl is most definitely not developed solely by one person though, it has thousands of contributors. in fact, there is so much red tape around curl that you can't even discuss making a change to it without first writing an RFC and having it approved by a committee.

    https://github.com/neodrama/github-drama is the closest thing I know of, but only covers things on github. lunduke usually covers a good bit of drama also. even mentioning his name on gnome forums is an instant auto-ban.

  • The problem is "decent" is subjective and not everyone agrees on what that means exactly. And you simply can't reason with some people. To that end I would say it can actually be extremely difficult or impossible to get some people to conform to your own idea of what's decent.

    Some people want to "keep politics out of things" (or whatever you prefer to define their actions/inactions as) without realizing that it's impossible. For example someone might not even want to discuss what is or isn't transphobia, or whether or not that should be allowed, because that itself is political to them, but NOT handling it (or deferring to moderators) might not be seen as political to them, even if others disagree. IMO nobody is "right" or "wrong", they just have a difference in opinion.

  • This is why I'm too afraid to contribute to open source anymore. It's always something. Anything you say can offend somebody now, and if you offend the wrong person, they can take the whole project down with them.

    You can't even just stick to the code, because people call that political too... "silence is violence" and whatnot.

    And right before they did that, they started removing footnotes from KB articles that only dealt with older OSes, so if you ever needed to go back and find something, it just wasn't there anymore. For example certain RGB packing formats were only supported on newer OSes and the footnote used to tell you that, but then it disappeared. I have been directly affected by that multiple times.

  • I do not like distributed, community-driven leadership. The more leadership is shared, the more arguments there are, and the less gets done.

    I would rather have a strong dictatorship focused on technical merit, to be deposed in the future for another dictator, again, based on technical merit.
