  • Yes. The United States Board on Geographic Names is the group within the Department of the Interior which handles these matters. They are a part of the executive branch. I suspect that you can follow a chain of delegated authorities through that board, up the civil service hierarchy, landing on the desk of the President.

    This is an example of the system not accounting for, or being ambivalent about, the election of someone to that office with a fascist ideology.

  • While that may be true, you also put them in places that should have a comma, but you want more pause; this is why boiling it down to a single aphorism is difficult.

    For example, I've read most of the comments in this thread, as well as the Oatmeal info-comic that someone linked, and I still don't know with certainty the semicolon I used above is grammatically appropriate.

    It's been awhile since I played Kotor, but isn't Dantooine just the Jedi Temple, surrounded by a veritable sea of grass, within which Space Hatfield's and Space McCoys are feuding with one another?

    Maybe it's cause I live in flyover country, but I could scarcely imagine a habitable planet from Star Wars that I'd want to visit less lol.

  • What gov job were you working which asked you to provide your social media details? I'm in the midst of a batch of interviews for a variety of gov positions, and I've not been asked to provide social media information once. It's not on any of the forms I've filled out, and it's not come up in any of my interviews.

    Even when I held a security clearance and worked positions which required that, I don't recall my social media coming up at all during the hiring process.

    Not saying it doesn't occur "unofficially" as a further vetting criteria, but I don't see what you mean by saying government jobs try to get you to volunteer that info to prevent phishing.

  • I'm asking this from a place of genuine ignorance: how does the evenness of the heat distribution matter when microwaving a pure liquid? I'm familiar with the microwave's uneven heating qualities. I'm sure we've all bit into food that is scalding hot on the surface and still lukewarm at best in its interior. However, I've always presumed that is a product of microwaving a heterogenous, predominantly solid substance.

    So, sure, the microwave applies heat unevenly to the water. But wouldn't the tiny little bits of water which get "over" heated simply diffuse their excess thermal energy into the rest of the homogenous volume in very short order? Furthermore,wouldn't an uneven heat distribution in a mug of water simply lead to convection currents flowing from hot to cold, therefore promoting a relatively even distribution?

  • Haha I had a similar experience this year. I knew of Farscape when it was airing, but I was much more of a Stargate fan in my teens. Saw it was streaming earlier this year and proceeded through 2 seasons and some change before it was made unavailable on the streaming platform I was using. I need to obtain the rest of the series so I can begin cranking out the memes.

    To be clear, the weirdos who prefer their sci Fi with Muppets and bondage gear is me. I'm weirdos.

  • That's a little reductive. The Division is a primarily PVE looter shooter with MMO trappings. Rainbow 6 is a competitive hero shooter with emphasis on quick kills and gadgets. Ghost Recon is an open world action game with emphasis on stealth.

    Don't get me wrong, "Ubisoft game" could be its own genre at this point, considering the amount of mechanical overlap in some areas, but most of those products do offer generally distinct gameplay experiences. Though, it does seem like Rainbow 6 and xDefiant would be positioned as rivals in market share, upon reflection.

  • Depends on how freely you assign historical tales mythical status, but Vinland Saga contains a lot of influence lifted directly from actual Viking stories like the Greenlander Saga.

    There's enough of the fantastical in both the historical sources and in the adaptation that I think it qualifies as an adaptation of folklore, if not myth.

  • I'm lucky enough to work for an organization which furnishes me with up to 4 hours of paid leave to vote. Plus, my polling place is on the road home, and I've never waited longer than a couple of minutes to vote. Finally, doing it in person feels more impactful, even if that's just a perception thing.

  • I think you've got an admirably optimistic outlook. I hope you're correct. However, I am afraid that you may be underestimating human greed and selfishness. Those aren't unique traits to any generation. Maybe it's human nature, maybe it's learned through existence in a capitalistic / hierarchically organized society. In any case, I am not confident that youth alone will prevent people from seeing the kind of country and world that was left to them, as you put it, and not desire to possess as much of the remnants as possible in an outburst of self-interest.

    For every person that sees the ice caps melting and wants to fix it somehow, I'm afraid there's almost certainly at least one other person who thinks, "Hell yeah, new oceanfront property just dropped, how can I own/sell it?"

  • Not that it really matters, but trying to learn about (Christian) God by reading the Old Testament is like trying to perform maintenance on your 2024 vehicle using a manual from the 2000 version of that car.. Like, yeah, that was relevant once, and there's some overlap, but the situation has evolved since then. It's called the Old Testament because it is based on something outdated (again, from a generically Christian perspective). The Old Covenant (which is what the Old Testament is testifying to) was between God and the Jews, and was based around compliance with the law. That's why the OT is so full of rules and punishments.

    Then, Jesus arrives on the scene and changed the game. His birth, betrayal, and death, represent a new contract between God and humanity (not just the Jews) wherein mankind is saved by God's grace alone. In fact, God has done a 180 on the whole obedience to the law thing. Turns out, God loves sinners, and prostitutes, and tax collectors, and prodigal sons, and all sorts of ne'er-do-wells that the God of the Old Testament would have reviled. From the death of Jesus forward (and maybe retroactively too, I don't know dogma all that well), the only thing necessary for your salvation is God's grace, and that is given to all, as long as you accept God into your heart or something like that. Basically, God is Darth Vader, and he has altered the deal, pray he does not alter it further.

    Of course, as with anything A) religious and B) 2000+ years old, there's a lot of disagreement on like every aspect of the above. But, I think I've got the gist of it correct from a generic, if Catholicism influenced, perspective. It's been a long time since I had to sit through a theology lecture.

    With all that being said though, I imagine that the reason the OT has stuck around in Christianity is that it's characterization of God as vindictive and capricious and obsessed with toeing the line is a very useful tool for keeping the plebs compliant. They get to have their cake and eat it too, as it were. "God loves you unconditionally sweetie, remember that, but also if you have sex before marriage you are DAMNED to HELL for ETERNITY!"
