  • It's pretty ok, yes. There's no shortage of platforms, and this one pushes for community control, so its political leaning isn't surprising, and since I like community control, I fit. You should try to find your community that aligns with you, but with software and communities that favor common working there's little chance it will not be left leaning

    Someone said it already: web 2.0 is only the web with capitalist entities colonizing the space. Web 2.0 going to shit is absolutely unsurprising. It is impossible for capitalist entities to not try to exploit and make it bad. They took control of web 2.0 by being middlemen, interfaces between providers and consumers, through APIs. An API is nothing spectacular: it's just one way to interface with a system, with the particularity that the system chooses what can be done, how it to be done, who can do it, etc... perfect for control. What is bluesky doing ? An app, connected to the big firehose that takes lots of resources to run and will only take more as more people will join. Bluesky is everyone doing their stuff on their own but to make it work you have to go through Bluesky's relay to make sure you don't miss something. Yes, alternative relays exist, just like alternative online retailers exist; that doesn't make Amazon disappear. The power of the Default is strong.

    Bluesky is putting all the cost (storage, app dev, even moderation) on the outside and keeps an eye on the flow, because that's where data, hence money, is.

    The only way to the old web, the web 1.0 or however it's called is without capitalists in it, there's no way around it. What shoul matter is how to make AT sustainable without bluesky (and any capitalist alternative), and should be the primary goal

  • I have a vps I use for other stuff, and put syncthing on it. My files are replicated between it, my computer and my phone. On the vps I activated the setting to store old versions

    For photos I use hetzner's storage share, a nextcloud offering. Photos are browsable with nextcloud's "memories" app, really useful.

    I don't really believe in "backups", ie a full copy of the content in another format that is unusable unless you run it through a special restoring process. If the files are being copied, why not make it useful ? Syncthing makes it so all environments are equally usable, and the versioning prevents mistakes. There is no restore phase: the files are already usable.

    I really think we need to move our thinking away from the one-machine-with-copies mindset, and architecture our usages around multiple-machines-by-default. If the goal of backups is resiliency, a syncthing clusters achieves that.

    One thing that still makes me hesitate with discourse when suggesting a forum is that discourse has this thing whera post can be turned into a wiki. Everyone can edit it, add/update informations. It's much better than a wiki "hidden" in another part of the community, here it's part of the flow of posts, you can comment, etc...

  • garage is a software project made for communal home hosting. Tech literates will talk about its S3 API but that's the least interesting part: the most interesting is that it has been purposely built to be hosted on (actual) commodity hardware like second-hand nucs, running on flaky home power and internet and linked together through usual isps. Nodes may come up and down but the cluster withstands all of that.

    Garage would be a pretty nice project to run a solar-powered mini-cluster. If sufficiently far from each other, you could even run without polluting batteries !

The fediverse is fundamentally a reimagination of our social links, so it's the occasion to do things differently. Get your friends together in a room and create accounts for each other, browse together, show each other what you discover. Create a private community just for your group to exchange stuff in there that on. This is a social "job" and it needs people keeping it alive, that is you in the beginning before the whole fediverse can do it

  • Yes ! Instead of going in with no clue expecting everyone but a small minority to be nice, this is the part where we grow up, we know that many (most, in some cases) of the interactions will be bad, so 1) we're not naive and 2) we share information about that.

  • There are levels to this. For sure, if we could automatically block instances with open signups and no manual verification, the worst of the worst would be eliminated and we could start with that. In fact I believe the author has a project of creating a larger-scale network of instances more or less like that, called Pangea.

    The nice thing is that however strict you want to be, there's a chance the same tools will be needed anyway, up to you to configure, and this is what Pelago does. No matter what you do with it, it becomes more useful to everyone and I like that. Doing what you're proposing helps those with stricter rules and vice versa !

  • I see your point and I think I agree. Maybe I'm willing to let it pass because I happen to agree with the decision (and would also agree with the hypothetical ban of Rails). Ultimately, it comes down to what you said: whatever you use, you should see how to become a full member

  • I still don't see the problem with Codeberg's decision. Of course they will kick projects that they don't want, just like github will kick projects they don't want. The issue isn't what is and isn't allowed, it's who allows it, as it always has been.

    Of course selfhosting is one way to control it, but in Codeberg there is a process to be part of that governance, which the author didn't partake in. At which point there is nothing more to discuss, get in the governance first and then you can write a blog post about how the governance is bad, isn't aligned with you or whatever.

    It's 2026. Who still expects things to be perfect with a third-party without participating ? Be part of the governance, selfhosted or not, always

    I don't have to go through artificial slowness, walls of ads, cookie/"please sign-in" gateways. My data remains mine. The thing does what it does, it just works. Using commercial stuff is actively aggressive towards me and requires my constant vigilance to get through; the fediverse just works for me

    It runs everywhere, is just a single file you double-click to open and browse from your browser. Makdown files are automatically rendered. You can upload a bunch of files directly, or just send them by mail and put them in a directory served by copyparty
