I joined Lemmy back in 2020 and have been using it as @qaz@lemmy.ml until somewhere in 2023 when I switched to lemmy.world. I'm interested in systemd/Linux, FOSS, and Selfhosting.

  • I'll go first.

    • I think there is a strong pro-Linux bias. It wouldn't surprise me if 40+% use it on here.
    • People from the US seem over-represented, but less so compared to Reddit
    • There is a far stronger anti-capitalist sentiment on here than other social media
    • The average age seems to be much higher. I joined when I was 16 and feel quite young unlike on other social media.
  • There is lobste.rs which I see in Google search sporadically, but I think that is because it favors common domains and Lemmy content is spread out over thousands of indivdual domains

  • Cool, I have a similar setup and was looking to upgrade to support Frigate and several other things in addition to the couple dozen Docker containers already running. It's nice to hear that won't be required.

  • No, I have it enabled and don't see a paywall. I thought you didn't have an adblocker to block the paywall

  • With a N100 or N305?

  • I didn't know it had a paywall. Do you have uBlock Origin?

  • So do I

    Yes

  • Are you sure about that? It shows a green globe, but the max upload speed stays below 1MiB/s. I saw other comments saying this could also indicate you are connected through other peers instead of being reachable through the forwarded port yourself.

  • The latest version of iLO4 is from 2023

  • A standard Docker container with a NodeJS/PHP/Python app is usually around 200-300 MB (yes really), the OpenJDK JVM is around a hundred MB, but a fully statically compiled rust binary that doesn't even depend on libc is just a couple MB and can be deployed as a tiny distroless Docker container.

It's a lot heavier than your 8kb C++ executable but it's nothing compared to what is required to deploy anything else.

  • I remember there being the option of using HTML or a Java applet, I chose the former

  • With unsafe, but how can you write a double linked list in safe rust? (without indices)

  • Classic example: A linked list

  • They had a hardware failure but close enough

  • Other engineers have a reputation for massive egotism, software engineers don’t really.

    That's a joke right?

  • Great read

  • Yeah, all the ones I've used had remote access

  • I'd rather plug in a screen with VGA than deal with HPE iLO 4

  • Oh no
