  • Right, that's where the other definitions come in. I'd say itch is a distributor rather than a publisher, but even if you don't care about that distinction, it is definitely the case that itch doesn't tell the developer to do anything. So publishing on itch doesn't affect the vision for the game.

    Nintendo... I mean kinda yeah. They're a weird one. Some of their games they're just the publisher, and there is another developer with a different name. But some things they do actually develop and self-publish. And some of the games have surprisingly few people working on them...

    There may actually be a few Nintendo games that are kinda indie, oddly enough.

  • I think the most accurate definition is "produced without a publisher". That's the thing they're independent of.

    Where it gets grey is things like "okay it has a publisher, but they're tiny and cute and only publish indie-feeling game"

    So the "feeling" of indie is "made by a small group of people with a shared cohesive vision and minimal outside influence", where publishers tend to be large sources of outside influence, and teams larger than, like, 50 people tend to be unable to all have a truly shared cohesive vision. And a single person, by definition, always has a shared vision no matter what they make. But if a publisher is low-touch, or brings a game that's basically done to market without asking for changes, and the game feels cohesive and personal, then that's good enough.

  • Yup! I've been running Linux on my machines in some way or another for 20 years. I've worked as a systems administrator and in ops teams. So I'm not a Linux beginner, and I'm not afraid of a shell.

    But I play steam games online with friends. I had a Windows 10 PC in my house specifically to be the gaming PC, I would turn it on, play a game, then turn it off. I didn't do anything else with the machine, but when I was running it I wasn't at work, I wasn't tinkering, I was relaxing.

    So anyway Microsoft botched Windows 11, big surprise, and people were talking about the Linux gaming revolution, and I was like "Hot Damn, if there's a Linux gaming revolution I want to be part of it!", so I installed Bazzite and... yup. I'm part of it.

    I haven't had a single issue since, at least with my machine and the games my friends play. I've been able to basically treat the system like it's a console. I boot it, navigate it with a controller, then I turn it off. Delightful!

    So thanks to everyone involved in making it a great experience!

  • I've been running Bazzite as my gaming PC for maybe a year now, and have done literally no configuring or troubleshooting since I installed it. I went to Desktop Mode to install Discord once, and otherwise have just treated it as a gaming console. Works great!

  • This is how you know it's a sickness. Wikipedia claims Trump's worth to be around 6.5 and 7 billion dollars. Nuts, but not what this is about. 5 million dollars is about 0.07% of his published worth.

    The median American has a net worth of $124,041 so if we use that same percent we get that the equivalent payout for an average American would be about $88. So, like, not nothing, but probably not something that's worth stringing along for years and doing everything you can to get out of.

    I know I've paid higher fines than that just to make problems go away because I didn't want to deal with them, and I'm a serial procrastinator!

    Some people have said, with varying amount of kidding, that poly is the only real way to assert bisexuality! Settling on any one partner has the risk of people "collapsing" your identity and feeling like you've "finally settled". But that doesn't apply if you've got a male and female partner both!

  • For sure for sure, but I will say that in my experience the proper "poly" communities, at least in my area, have a higher rate of people who have thought about the nature of relationships and often already have some kind of stable attachment already.

    Not all, for sure, but the odds are different for finding someone who has already demonstrated their ability to maintain connections to people over time, and is looking to extend that. Whereas in the monogamy world, every person is single for some reason, and you're hoping it was the other person last time. 😛

  • I've spent a lot of time with Open Source Programmers and other nerds, including in person, and I believe at least some of the issue is that some of them feel grooming and hygiene is purely aesthetic, bordering on "shallow". Like the way many of us think about Looksmaxxing or cosmetic surgery.

    Like, you spend a bunch of time and money doing your hair or washing your clothes? That time didn't improve your card playing, it didn't teach you anything new. Shouldn't people be judged by what's inside instead of what's outside? Shouldn't people be judged by their skill or merit rather than their looks?

    And I intentionally wrote that last one to feel borderline, because I think a lot of people do feel that way, and do believe those things, but not to the same extent. Their boundary for "hygenic enough" requires clean. And maybe the folks I'm characterizing don't know that it's actively unpleasant to be around someone who smells bad? Or maybe they're so steeped in it they don't know how bad it is?

    Tangentially, this is one of the reasons some fem people struggle in these spaces. Any amount of eye-shadow, nice shirt, or hair-style is deemed as "superfluous", and so any person who spends their time and money on such things is regarded with suspicion. They're an idiot who wastes their time on looks at best, not to be trusted making other decisions, or a charlatan trying to trick lesser men with their wiles at worst. Those are the only two choices, because there's no other imaginable reason someone could do these things.
