  • Plenty of people are ok with ads and such, and that's fine. People who don't want that may need to pay for the infrastructure of having an alternative platform. It all comes down to what you value more, and there's no inherently right or wrong answer.

  • If the money is freely given as a donation, then I'm with you. If lack of money is what is stopping someone from making things that others are willing to pay to see more of, then sure. But if the only way to do it is to have ads or selling our data etc, then I don't want that.

  • I'd rather have one unix surrealism than a thousand influencers with lots of followers. These days, I want to be among people who interact as equals, who share ideas, who cooperate in a genuine way. If we try a shortcut to more users through money, what is the point?

  • Penultimate? Which one is the ultimate then?

  • Nice! I read in a wiki that the fn+space key combo didn't work on the T14, but perhaps that's outdated info now.

  • To me, a downvote means "what you wrote contributes nothing to the discussion, and should be less visible". If someone downvotes me, I take it as a sign that no further discussion in that direction is meaningful.

  • Does the keyboard backlight work out of the box? I heard you had to fiddle a bit to get that working on newer thinkpads.

  • You got your answer, I guess.

  • I think the idea is that what we want to see more of is genuine discussions in good faith using sound arguments, even if we don't personally agree with the viewpoint. If I'm just tired of seeing certain types of posts I can block them without downvoting their posts.

  • Do they start at the same time or waiting for one to finish before doing the next?

  • Isn't this the dilemma? Each type of fediverse project has its own focus, presenting posts in different ways. If we increase interoperability to the point where everything can be presented fully on any service, will each service be able to keep their focus? Would there be a point in having pixelfed when mastodon exists?

  • (Approximately 25.5 pt. Now, the closest traditionally named font size is 24pt, called "double pica", and Pica Pica is the latin name for the magpie, who is known for stealing and hoarding shiny things. What does this mean??)

  • Mine just says "This product contains nicotine and is highly addictive".

  • Going by the top Duck duck go results for "how many stars in our galaxy" and "how many trees in the world":"According to Jos de Bruijne, a scientist at the European Space Agency (ESA), the current estimate is between 100 to 400 billion stars."and "There are an estimated 3.04 trillion trees in the world."

  • In Phaedrus, Socrates talks about the invention of writing:"it will introduce forgetfulness into the soul of those who learn it: they will not practice using their memory because they will put their trust in writing, which is external and depends on signs that belong to others, instead of trying to remember from the inside, completely on their own. You have not discovered a potion for remembering, but for reminding; you provide your students with the appearance of wisdom, not with its reality. Your invention will enable them to hear many things without being properly taught, and they will imagine that they have come to know much while for the most part they will know nothing. And they will be difficult to get along with, since they will merely appear to be wise instead of really being so."
