  • Freedom of speech never existed and as a rule can never exist. It's an idea that has never been and will never be a reality. This is not to agree or disagree with whatever speech you don't want censored. There is no place/time/environment where you can say whatever you want without some form of consequences from some subset of people.

    Freedom of speech is and has always been a fantasy.

  • I mean most of us were acutely aware of it since November of 2016 and perhaps even before, but yeah. So far the awareness seems to be more of a punishment because we can see the train wrecks coming but can't seem to convince the drivers of the car we're in to actually stop parking on the tracks.

    Perhaps blissful ignorance may save our mental state.

    I find lemm.ee is better than most but yeah as others have said, since everything is federated and the majority mass of users are hardcore leftists there's no way to really avoid them. Just get used to the downvotes and easily offended snowflakes and instabans and hope that as more people leave the mainstream social medias for federated socials that these people will be watered down.

I think for the most part, keeping things boring is best but sometimes a country/government/culture rots to the point that the only way for it to correct itself is through some bloody action of some kind. That can be a revolution started by its own people, a civil war, or a war that perhaps the country itself starts but then loses (see Germany and WWII). I think the US is slowly making its way to that point as the safeguards of democracy are continuously being eroded by Republicans and conservatives and there will be a point of no return.
