  • Yup. We knew this. But they won’t let us buy the affordable cars because that sort of free market would put US companies out of business.

    While I mostly agree with you, the Chevy Bolt brand new can be had for $29,990. We really should have the option to buy Chinese EVs since the majority of other US car makers have abandoned the EV segment, and therefore deserve no protection from a market they are not in anymore.

  • The way to fix this is to make the entirety of the school experience the same. Not by going cheap. But by giving more money to poorer schools to subsidize education so it’s up to the exact same standard across the board.

    Where are you proposing the tax money come from for this? While there are certainly areas of poverty that lack funds, I'm not even sure that's the majority of the lack of funds. Another is today's senior citizens that were fine with their children's education being subsidize by yesterday's senior citizens and the childless tax payments, but as soon as their children are grown they vote down any tax increases to fund schools.

    Another point: I know a number of families that have intentionally moved out of good school, well funded, districts seeking lower taxes, and hence, worse funded schools. They would fight you on getting better funding even for their own schools if it meant the necessary tax increases. Teachers don't, and shouldn't work for free.

  • I'm surprised this wasn't the case before today. ETFs are a mix of stocks. It would make sense that there are more combinations than base ingredients. There is one ice cream recognized as "Chocolate Chip", but variations such as "Mint Chocolate Chip", "Cherry Chocolate Chip", etc.

  • I'm not a kobo owner, but I've bought multiple hundreds of dollars of fully legal ebooks off Humble Bundle. Some of these collections are actually sourced through the Kobo ebook store for the backend delivery. Other collections are non-DRM epubs. I'm currently reading through the Martha Wells collection (Murderbot, Ile-Rien series). It was $18 for 14 of her novels/novellas. Prior to that was a collection of Hugh Howey (Dust, Sand) and Neil Stephenson (Seveneves) There's currently a Robert Silverberg collection of 32 books for $18 I'll probably pick up.

  • In hindsight, it was probably impossible for the studio to satisfy us, but I wish they could have tried just a little bit harder.

    Imaging in if in 1999, instead of TPM, we were given Rogue One. I could even see a really cool alternate history where all us saw the releases in reverse order. As in Rogue One, Episode 3, Episode 2, Episode 1. Each time get a little bit further back into the history while the origin remains a mystery until the end.

  • Another overnight camper here. We brought a long utility extension cord and got permission from the theater to use an external power outlet. We had laptops and set up a LAN. Keep in mind those days laptop screens (passive matrix LCD) couldn't do high motion FPS like games so we were limited to RTS games time Warcraft 2 and Command and Conquer.

    Did I mention there were traintracks and a road crossing right next to the theater so that every 3 hours or so a giant long freight train would go by, and wake everyone up?

    I had that exact same thoughts on the movie when finally seeing it as @wjrii@lemmy.world. We all talked about how cool the duel was and all pretended not to be disappointed by the senate scenes and JarJar existing.

    The campout was a lot more fun than the movie.

    That sounds like a great use case for Agentic AI. Write your prompt to be something like: "Create a process that will consume X number of tokens per day. Scatter the requests throughout the workday with no more than 20 minutes between requests. Discard any generated results. Run Monday through Friday from 8AM to 5PM".

    Boss: Are you using AI in your daily work as we are requiring?Worker: "Not only am I using it, I've automated one of my most annoying required tasks increasing my productivity!"

  • Most of the time the activity doesn't actually take much time. The older I get, the faster time seems to pass and I have awareness of this fast-time-passing. So instead of avoiding the thing for hours, I just do it instead and am actually fully done with the activity in usually less than an hour. After that you can pat yourself on the back saying that you're an adult and you took care of an adult responsibility, but truly you are self-aware enough to know you were one tiny breath away from skipping it to do something time-wasting or irresponsible instead. For one more day you get to live the illusion you're and adult and you can take care of your adult responsibilities.

    If you do this more often than not, you actually are an adult and actually do take care of your adult responsibilities on regular basis.

    The age of the DC doesn't really matter. Its whether it was designed to be an "open loop" or "closed loop" cooling system. Closed loop DC use surprisingly little water because they capture and recycle it. A fast food restaurant would likely use more water than a closed looped DC. The big offending Datacenters for water use are the Open Loop design. These use massive amounts of water.

    Close to me there are two DCs under construction. One is a large colocation DC and is closed loop. The other is a new AWS DC, and it is open loop. So as you can see, age isn't really the determining factor.

    So you're asking yourself, why use open loop at all? Its energy bill is cheaper! Open loop uses swamp coolers (evaporative cooling) Closed looped requires more electricity for cooling using more traditional phase-change coolant (same as residential air conditioners).

That is the opposite of unfiltered and direct thoughts. She's actively fomenting dissent and chaos in the USA. I have no idea what she gains by doing this. Anyone check to see if she's getting a separate paycheck from Russia?

    Anyone can create an AI model (including Gen AI LLMs). I personally created on for a hobby project trained exclusively on a series of old public domain novels from the early 1900s. Don't get me wrong, my AI model sucks and only produced barely coherent responses, but it absolutely meets the definition of an AI model.

    So how would this White House action (if implemented into law) affect me and my model?

    • Would I have to submit my model to a government agency to run it on my local computer?
    • Would it only apply to models deployed for the consumption of others?
    • Private companies that build their own AI models purely for internal business purposes not used for public consumption, would they be obligated to put it them through some government process before these models could be used inside companies?
    • Is it perhaps not all AI models would need to go through this government approval process, but then what criteria defines a model that would vs one that wouldn't?

  • As long as the transaction doesn't require biometrics, I wonder if you could have a traditional smartphone (iphone/android) located physically somewhere else, and a self hosted VPN that would allow you to VPN and remote control the traditional smartphone remotely. So you could run the real bank app on real smartphone hardware (no emulation), and not have to carry it having all access through your Linux phone with a remote control client.

    The downside is you'd be responsible for the burden for securing this solution, as your banking app would be one of the most critically security data concerns.

    If it has a full compliant web browser, you'd still have the bank's desktop website available, yes? Though its possible the bank's website may not be written with context awareness so usability may be cumbersome, but at least you'd still have access to the information.
