My pet sociological theory is that irony has poisoned society in such a pervasive way that it opened the doors to our current cultural and political climate.
I think it started in the early 90s. But it’s a progressive thing, so it has seeds earlier than that, for sure. But it really took off in the 90s.
When people grow up in a society filled with irony and people holding things at a distance with irony, it really fucks up social development.
They are all examples of seeking short snippets over long form reading. We are being habituated to do that. And there are people that proudly say and do these things and promote the culture of doing these things. People are doing it in this thread.
Maybe someone can use these as precedent to go after that app. But that app needs to be addressed quickly, because from what I understand, the app is mainly targeting the people who are required to use it. Journalists.
If the app disappears from public app stores and is required to be sideloaded, you’ll know they are trying to keep it from people who will take it apart like this guy did.
I don’t know that they always are. It’s easy from our nerd bubble to dismiss AI and LLMs because we understand their limitations and how they work to an extent.
We shouldn’t look down on anyone who takes the advertising and idea that these are “intelligence” at face value. The disclaimers that say that the intelligence is fallible, just like us, are never as strongly worded as they should be. If the AI companies made things clearer, they would be de-hyping their products.
I dunno, this whole thing is unprecedented. And the hype around it all, taken at face value, is irresponsible and misleading.
