Install Guix

  • Yeah... But Google and US Big Tech have too much power and are making the world shitty for everyone. I'd like to contribute my grain of sand to someone else.

  • Yeah, I'm not buying any more Pixels. I got the Fairphone 6! It's good! I'm in the US, so I got it from Clove. Works fine on T-Mobile.

Although, I'm currently running Android... Probably have to install e/OS or something.

I hope Fairphone can continue to grow to eventually meet Graphene's hardware requirements.

  • I don't review that shit. Those PRs tend to be huge walls of text. If you didn't take any effort into preparing something for me, then I'm not making any effort into reviewing it for you.

    Let the slop flow! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

When it breaks, I'm also not jumping in to fix it.

  • LOL. Exactly. This reminds me of a slop code change my manager recently posted. It was a million lines, where really it just needed to be like 3 or 4 lines. I refuse to do a real review for slop PRs.

Later in standup he proudly proclaims, "You know, that PR was mostly Claude." ... ... ...

I know! It was bad! You should feel bad! The fact that he was proud of it showed he doesn't know what the hell he's doing. More lines of code means higher performance, right?? 😂

  • And the new apps will be subject to the exact same laws.

Hm? I don't see how the government is going to force me to enable ID age verification on my self-hosted Stoat instance.... 🤔

  • I think it took a long time for me the first time. They seem way smaller than Discord, so I imagine they don't have the fastest infrastructure. Also, I signed up with a non-gmail account and their verification email did make it through eventually.

  • You can create text or voice channels! ( I haven't tried voice chat yet though.)

You can search for existing servers or create your own server by signing up for the official instance: https://stoat.chat/login

Or self host your own. The official instance does seem a little slow.

  • Eh, the more you say it, the more normal it'll sound. Stoat. Like oat. Or like stoked.

"Goo Gewl" isn't exactly a good name...

  • It's also worth noting, you don't need to self host. You can sign up for their hosted instance too. https://stoat.chat/login

Of course, if you want to self host that's great too.

  • I had a Model 3 for several years. I didn't find the quality that great. I actually was surprised how average/slightly shitty it was. The interior of my Kia Niro is way nicer than my Model 3 interior was. Everything feels way more premium on the Niro.

In terms of software, again, my Model 3 wasn't that great. I constantly had problems with the screen bugging out. Sometimes I couldn't adjust the air, sometimes ghost cars would appear around me while I was parked, the cars would be twitching out. The worst was when I was driving on a highway, going like 120km/h, and then the whole damn car decides to reboot. Luckily, I was able to continue driving, but the speedometer was gone, the air started blasting (and I couldn't control it), the radio was stuck (I couldn't control it).

Yes, the Tesla touchscreen was high res and responsive, but so are modern cars now. I have a Kia Niro with a fantastic screen, high res, responsive, and I can use Android Auto. The interior build quality is also way better than the Model 3 was. I also have an Hyundai Ionic 6, which also has a great screen, also allows Android Auto.

Both the Niro and the Ionic 6 have pretty comparable drive assist features too. Tesla may still be ahead, technically, but other car manufacturers have closed the gap significantly.

I don't miss Tesla at all.

  • Hyundai Ionic 6 (sedan) or Ionic 5 (suv). I have the Ionic 6. It's great! Even better than my old Model 3 because I can use Android Auto. AND I haven't had the 6 reboot on me during highway driving.

(My Model 3 once rebooted while I was driving on the highway.)

  • I don’t really see a future of leaving unless they actualy start doing the “internment” stuff, this ICE thing is not “dangerous enough”

That's the point of OP's question. How bad is it gonna get? Should people start preparing to leave now? As you said, the process takes a while. By the time they start going door to door in Philly, dragging non-whites to interment camps, that's a wrap. You waited too long to get out.

I get the allure of American Exceptionalism, thinking "Nah, this can't happen here." On the other hand, shit keeps getting worse and growing.

I can't tell the future. Maybe things start getting better after mid-terms. Maybe Trump peacefully transfers power at the end of his term.

I feel like at least doing a little research into immigrating to another country is a responsible thing to do. IF things get bad enough, I want to have more or less an idea of where to go and how to do it.

  • If it's really something you care about, I'd suggest:

    • switch your computer, phone, etc to your native language
    • look up famous authors, books written in your native language and read them
    • torrent media in your native language (see fmhy for example) (bonus non-english torrents could use more help seeding)
    • talk/share with your parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc more
    • take more vacation in your parent's previous country

Personally, this is something I struggle with. I'm brown, don't have an English sounding name (nor do I want one), and I was born in the USA, yet I've never felt welcomed here and have always felt like a guest in my own country. Especially right now with all the ICE shit, it's very clear that even though I was born in the USA, I will never be considered Unitedstatian.

My family, native language, and culture provide some relief.

  • I wish Hetzner didn't require uploading my legal documents (they asked for my passport or ID) to verify my account. Otherwise, seems cool. I'm in the US.

  • Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you'll give up your PC to rent one from the cloud

We're so doomed. A lot of people will probably buy into this because they can't possibly be inconvenienced by owning a computer.

I was talking about AI with someone the other day and they said, "Wow, in the future we probably won't be able to work without a subscription to ChatGPT. Oh, well." Like. wat. teh. faq. People see the convenience trap, but can't be bothered to do anything about it. I hate this timeline.

  • YES! The Macbook Wheel! 🙌

I never really realized how much I hated keyboards until I saw thing.

  • setup with no need of complex licenses, it would be interesting

It doesn't seem like you need any licensing, it's like a walkie talkie.

it could prove as a useful city project for cheap, reliant, local communications

I'm not sure if that's the right usecase. Meshtastic seems to be for short-range, line-of-sight-ish communication. Apparently, you can set up repeaters to expand the coverage area, but it seems like buildings, trees, etc will dramatically affect the signal strength. (I think?)
