  • My family call it the "spaghetti box".

  • More simply, replace uptime with downtime.

99% uptime and 99.9% uptime seem close.

1% downtime and 0.1% downtime is clearly a 10x difference.

  • If everyone coded like this, we wouldn't have so many data centres spewing soot into the sky.

  • Age verification took away the need to regulate it so it's safe for kids. Now it's not safe for anyone.

Remember when people would post event flyers to facebook and everyone subscribed to the group would see it?

Now it's like trying to withdrawal your pay from a poker machine instead of an ATM.

  • The current messaging app doesn't even have a search function. This is well overdue.

  • I ran a packet capture on my TV as I left it turned off overnight.

They wake up in the middle of the night, do "stuff" then go back offline. Like a zombie.

  • There seems to be a "JPEG reconstruction" feature that gets the original JPEG back.

  • I think many of us have several GBs of JPEGs that have accumulated over the years. It would be nice to shrink them a bit.

However I wouldn't do it until the majority of my software supports it. At least with JXL, you can transcode it back to legacy jpeg without losing quality

  • I was tempted to run PoE to the other side of the wall where my server is. A doorbell that could do it all locally on my server.

Then I thought "fuck it" and bolted an antique brass bell there instead. At least you know it's working.

  • Microsoft Outlook the exchange server.

    Microsoft Outlook the lunchbox.

    Microsoft Outlook the flamethrower.

Yeah, I reinstalled that much that I remember it.

  • I have immich running on a server that's under the stairs. It's a bit loud, but it's out of the way. I can only access it over SSH.

For backups, I wrote a shell script to do it. I just plug in my external drive, run the script, and unplug it again. The next day I'll swap the drive for one that I keep in my workplace locker. There's also a mirrored RAID for the server. That's 4 copies in total.

Yeah, it's still a bit of work. I couldn't imagine teaching anyone else how to do it.

  • Would you trust a pre-flashed phone though?

I guess with GOS they have integrity checkers.

  • Basically, Microsoft spies on everyone. They'll identify you and let the feds trawl through your OneDrive account. On Windows, it actually takes a very conscious effort to NOT upload files to OneDrive.

They're targeting a guy just because he unknowingly interacted with the suspect. As a joke.

If anyone questions why people like me have a GrapheneOS pixel connecting to self-hosted cloud storage on a home linux server, this is why.

  • That's the funny thing. You could have a huge house debt with massive repayments, but your net worth is based on the value of the house and what you still owe. Your disposable income is comparable to a homeless person.

I felt dirt poor right up until my last payment.

  • Every time it intervenes, it makes things worse. They have a 99% false positive rate.

  • I thought this was every argument for child safety by everyone ever tbh

  • I did this once, except I just messed with the polls on most of Australia's biggest news outlets. It was surprisingly easy to do, and even the outlets themselves reported on my fabrications.

It was good lulz tho. Especially when they finally figured out that they'd been had. They all stopped running polls after that.
