  • I feel like people here may be missing the point. The headline is poorly-worded.

    The problem is not that they are printing too many duplicates of a card set, and lowering the price. The problem is that they are making too many card sets!

    Their MO here lately has been to push some wild new exciting Universes Beyond set, like Final Fantasy, or Doctor Who, or Lord of the Rings, or whatever. They hype this thing up, it comes out to big fanfare, and then it's immediately on to the next one in the next quarter.

    They are pumping these out as fast as possible, and it's pissing everybody off. Steamers are sick of it. Players are sick of it. Investors are sick of it. Tolarian Community College has been very vocal about how this shit has been ruining the game and diluting the game into a random soup of somebody else's lore. Their own teams have a hard time balancing the game because of the dizzying pace, and there's been so many cases of standard being left with some broken card fucking up the format for months.

    This lawsuit is a good thing.

  • In The Jigsaw Man, and similar stories in that era of the Known Universe, organs are extracted so viciously because the rich can achieve near-immortality through constant cycling of damaged organs. Thus, the demand for organs by powerful people prompted an increase in supply by any means necessary.

    In this kidney scenario, we're talking about introduction of capitalism into organ donation. The medical industry is already entrenched enough as it is into capitalism, fucking over real people because they can't afford healthcare, and this would bring it to a new low. Powerful people will already demand high prices for organs that were normally regulated with priority system that figures out who actually needs it the most, outside of class. As soon as we open this door, the economics will eventually force large classes of people to sell whatever extra organs they have to the rich just to survive poverty. Exploitation of the poor to benefit the rich in yet another way previously blocked to them.

  • Nope, not really. You occasionally find them in some old government building, but only because it's always existed that way, and they just don't want to bother replacing it with a modern digital clock.

    This line of thinking is the same as saying cursive writing is worth teaching.

    Schools haven't adapted solely out of spite, to propagate this self-fulfilling cycle of teaching how they work, so that their own students can read school clocks. As soon as they leave the school zone, that knowledge is practically useless to them.

  • A long time ago, I used to work at a gas station when post-pay was allowed. All of the pumps required the cashier to activate them when somebody picked up the nozzle, but it was just expected that you hit the button to allow them to pump first. Most of the time, it's just a normal transaction. Sometimes, you realized some asshole stole gas when the next guy was at the pump.

    Enough of this happened, especially during periods of high gas prices, that my boss would say "prepay is required now", and we'd tell them they have to come inside first. Eventually, paying with credit cards was so popular, and cash transactions were so rare, that nobody allowed post-pay anymore. There wasn't a point, when the risk was people would steal gas, and it's so easy to just stick a CC in a slot.

    So, yeah, there's locks on the pumps, but if post-pay is the norm, it doesn't really matter.
