  • The article is actually discussing a feasibility study for the far future (25 years from now as per the article):

    For the first time, researchers from King’s College London have assessed the possible impact that generating solar energy in space could have for Europe. They found it could cut energy battery storage needs by more than two-thirds.

    The study, published in Joule, analysed the potential of a design by NASA for solar generation, which is planned to be in use by 2050. The findings show the design could also save money by reducing the cost of the whole power system in Europe by up to 15%, including energy generation, storage and network infrastructure costs – an estimated saving of 35.9 billion euros per year.

    Space-based solar power generation involves in-space continuous collection of solar energy. This involves placing large solar panels on satellites in orbit, where they are exposed to much more sunlight and can continuously collect energy without being affected by clouds or the day-night cycle. This energy would then be transmitted to one or more stations on Earth. It is then converted to electricity and delivered to the energy grid or batteries for storage.

    It's a cool idea and I'd imagine we'd need an array spanning the globe rather than just over one continent

  • That's an actual problem with some of them. It chunks up the prompt and assigns weights to different parts, and doesn't understand the original intent

    Saying "No food on the plate" might have it decide "plate + food + no"

    Compared to saying "empty plate" for example

    Auto naming functionality is neat in some cases, like the AI chat UI itself

    • It's convenient to have names when toggling between a few recent chats or searching through 10s or 100s of chats later on
    • I spawn new chats often and it's tedious to name them all
    • I don't have a strong preference for what the title is as long as it's clear what the chat was about

    Tab groups don't hit those points at all

    • I'll have a handful of tab groups
    • I don't make them often
    • I have a strong preference for what it's called, and the AI will have trouble figuring out exactly what I'm using those sites for

    Also, to the users who downvoted your comment, I don't see any reason for the downvotes? ayyy@sh.itjust.works's comment looks like a genuine good faith question asking why some people enjoy this strip, and valid reasons for why others might not see the appeal. Even then there's no reason we all need to enjoy the same comic strips

  • The amanitin toxin is heat stable, remaining toxic whether eaten raw or cooked. The mechanism of action of amatoxin is by inhibiting RNA polymerase, causing disruption of transcription of mRNA. As a result, hepatocytes cannot synthesize key protein coding genes, leading to the disintegration of nucleoli and pathologically centrilobular hepatic necrosis. This leads to the insidious onset of liver failure over 48 hours. Late onset (more than six hours after ingestion) of vomiting and watery diarrhea occur due to the second component in some of these mushrooms which are phallotoxin. Lepiota species lack phallotoxins so may not have the onset of vomiting and diarrhea until after 12 hours post-ingestion, or may just present with symptoms of liver failure at 24 hours post ingestion.

    As for the AI portion

    “ChatGPT and other AI services are basically killing @Iconfactory, and I’m not exaggerating or being hyperbolical,” Iconfactory developer Sean Heber said in a Mastodon post earlier this month.

    The issue isn’t that people are using AI instead of mobile apps, but how vibe coding is affecting the need for app design firms like theirs. Besides building its own apps, the Iconfactory generated revenue by offering app design services, which include things like icon design (hence the name), app design, marketing asset creation, plus branding and consulting services.

  • This is important because no matter what you do, there is always so much more you could be doing. I'd argue that for most people, having those connections is also important for fulfilling whatever reasons you have for pursuing privacy (safety, financial security, political reasons).

    It's also possible to use a service while severely cutting down how much information they can gather:

    • use a relay email address
    • use the web browser instead of the app
    • set up recommended settings on your browser

    Another point is that there is a benefit from blending into a crowd. You don't want to stick out as the one user that's doing much more than necessary

    I have run into users not being aware of which community a post is in a few times. Two recent examples

    • We were discussing whether we should remove a post from !canada@lemmy.ca and if it was relevant to Canada. Two users may have misunderstood it as trying to defend trump
    • I posted a study comparing the efficacy of a particular vaccine regiment in !medicine@mander.xyz, which is intended for medical professionals, and someone thought I was posting antivax disinfo. Studies on vaccine efficacy are common, and that's how we decide on schedules and develop better ones

    I get it, times are stressful. I left polite comments pointing out the community, and in both cases it would have been smoother if the person checked what the community is about before making assumptions.
