If the linux kernel had any real budget to speak of, they could hire rust experts to maintain the rust code. But the "linux" foundation spends 2% of its budget on Linux, this is the situation you end up with.
As a remedy, Perens proposes that licenses should be replaced by contracts. He envisions that companies pay for the benefits they receive from using FOSS. Compliance for each contract would be checked, renewed, and paid for yearly, and the payments would go towards funding FOSS development. Individuals and nonprofits would continue to use FOSS for free.
One of the people coining the term is more levelheaded and realistic than the average FLOSS community member.
I've actually tried to promote paying for opensource in multiple companies and there has been either silence or responses like "it's free, why should I?" or "I would, if they sold a license". Perens' ideas are actually up to date and I believe we need a license for opensource like the creative commons licenses: free for personal use paid for commercial use. Companies shouldn't be able to make profits from free work without paying back.

Again, the Linux kernel needs more funding. For crying out loud, these kinds of people holding back progress should be made obsolete (by bringing in and paying talent that is willing to work towards a brighter future with less memory errors, a sane tech stack with better tooling, and better processes). Holding back progress because of their incessant pearl clutching "but my dearest C!!!" Just hurts everybody and impedes progress.
Of course blindly adding the latest and greatest is asking for trouble. Assessing risk, weighing options, making a plan and continuously assessing impact is definitely important, but straight up blocking the road on principle is extremely unproductive.
C++ has a bunch of functional properties. It has lambdas, function pointers which allow currying, higher order functions, it has of course pure functions, functors, recursion, lazy evaluation, a type system supporting lambda calculus, and so on.
C++ is the dumping ground of programming paradigms. Name a paradigm and C++ probably has it. Just because another programming language supports some aspects of a paradigm doesn't make it pure. Or for another a more common example: just because it quacks like a duck, doesn't always mean its a duck.
In other words, rust is about as functional as C++. Plus minus a few things.
Nearly expected. The Linux Foundation doesn't spend nearly enough money on the linux kernel to get new blood into it willing to contribute what is necessary (in this case Rust).
I honestly would pay to have this done by a professional. Hand in my old USB2 device to replace the connector with a USB-C one to cut down on eWaste. Although, I don't know how many people would do that ...
It looks like a nice effort. But IMO, if you want traction, people should be able to contribute. Is this on Codeberg or something?
And regarding UI, it's beautiful, but IMO cards aren't future proof to large amounts of data, unless you add some kind of filtering that doesn't involve loading all data in the browser first. Also, clicking on the different languages reorders them. I clicked on Arabic and wanted to get back to English but in its place was Russian.
Of course this might be an alpha and it looks better than anything I could every come with 👍

Can't remember where I read it, but I think it's the dude who started AsahiLinux that shared part of his story in the scene. And a few dudes were tracked down and had the choice between a lawsuit and employment. Makes the decision pretty easy.
Doesn't help that they did their thing on Github and other public platforms instead of I2P or something.
