    • radicle - federated sourceforge. Doesn't have a CI but they are actively working on it, but your repo is replicated across multiple instances, "pull requests" (they call them patches - example) can be done across instances, and the devs dog-food it (one of their repositories), and it also works on TOR

    I'd love to support gitlab, but they refuse to invest in federation and there have been rumors about inter to be bought by Google, which will definitely kill any federation suggestions.

  • Why are we doing this again?

    We’ve experienced some pain with C++. In short:

    • tools and compiler/platform differences
    • ergonomics and (thread) safety
    • community

    Preach. make install is the biggest source of "works on my machine" ever. (obviously exaggerating). You could point me at 99% of all C++ projects that have dependencies and it ./configure && make install wouldn't work on any of my machines. "Oh of course you need to install the dependencies, just sudo apt get" let me stop you right there, I don't have debian. And with that you're on your own with C/C++ projects.

    Everything else in that chapter plays a big part in my departure from C++. ~30 years of existence and they have barely learned from their missteps.

    We’ve succeeded. This was a gigantic project and we made it. The sheer scale of this is perhaps best expressed in numbers:

    • 1155 files changed, 110247 insertions(+), 88941 deletions(-) (excluding translations)
    • 2604 commits by over 200 authors
    • 498 issues
    • Almost 2 years of work
    • 57K Lines of C++ to 75K Lines of Rust 5 (plus 400 lines of C 6)

  • I said it elsewhere and I'll say it here again, get rid of the damn mailing lists, and embrace rust + it's tooling. The Linux kernel dev experience is horrendous. Go tell a freshly minted github user how to contribute to the kernel using a mailing list and see the interest vanish. Tell a budding kernel developer to follow a 10 minute article on how to build the kernel and another 10 minute article on how to test it. I'm sure that'll keep the majority willing to contribute.

    The kernel needs new blood, but it won't get that many if maintainers hang on to development practices and tools from the last century.

    P.s I'm grateful for maintainers and contributors, but help us help you.

  • Please for all that is good in the world, let the Linux foundation invest the majority of their funds in the Linux kernel first. Then please have a marketing budget bigger than what's left.. A paltry 2% of their funding going to kernel stuff is an absolute joke.

    The kernel also badly needs to be rewritten in rust. Not all at once but piecemeal. The rust tooling is lightyears ahead of whatever is being used now, getting into a rust project is also so much easier. There's another project, the name of which I can remember, doing a rewrite and building it is a simple as cargo build. Seriously, that's the level of simplicity I want, not whatever bullshit I have to do now and follow a guide, take my own notes on how to make it work on my specific distro, fail a few times, and stare at unreadable GCC errors.

    Also please please please stop using a mailing list (or at least make it optional). Holy moly are you losing a bunch of next gen devs through that. Regardless of how controversial the CoC was, it finally changed the tone a little, which is nice, but mailing lists are seriously archaic. The absolute minority uses them. It's another big thing hampering kernel development (at least to me). They are a terrible experience through and through that make it difficult to follow discussions, diffs difficult to read and interact with (leave comments on lines and respond to them), and spams the inbox.

    Please let kernel development move into this century.

If it gets to the point where they work together with AlienWare to make gaming rigs powered by SteamOS, or even produce something together with Lenovo, HP, or Dell, and make it available in retailers, maybe then we'll finally see it enter more people's homes.

    Android is Linux, but it's so heavily modified that it's a case of Theseus's ship.

  • First, I don't know of an option to install windows directly on a Mac. Microsoft says to use "Boot Camp Assistant" which, as far as I understand, is a VM. Second, windows is heavier than Linux in terms of consumption and resources.

    If your mac is struggling with linux, my advice is to try a different and lightweight desktop environment (xfce, lxde, ...), or get new hardware. Linux is about the lightest thing you can throw on there.

  • You'd have a better time installing Linux. On that hardware it's been tested many times and is quite lean (as opposed Windows 10). You can also runs decent amount of games by installing steam, lutris, or heroic game launcher.

I think too many have forgotten what it's like to be a beginner and make a fatal mistake, which would explain the mocking responses here and things like recommending new linux users Arch.
