  • Putting aside my opinions about Framework and their nazi-enveloping tent, I think this is good news and could help get more Linux users. North America already has 10% linux market share. If more youtubers keep talking about it, we could see another jump.

  • Android is still controlled by Goofle. They release the source when they want to and how they want to. They change the rules the same way and everybody has to scramble to adapt once the changes drop. That's hardly the way it should be working.

  • For now, yes they aren't more secure. That's no surprise as that hasn't been the focus. Linux hasn't been used in that fashion for a long time and there's catching up to do.

    Getting a linux phone on the market and getting it into many people's hands plus that of developers will make it secure. Especially if governments invest in secure phones for their armies, special forces, and intelligence community.

  • Buddy, how are you going to communicate with people via Signal even without a username? Are protests full of free WiFi?

    If you think getting rid of phone numbers on an internet connected application will help you at a local protest where you should be using a local network for communication (Bluetooth for example), you are just lost.

    Having your phone number will only reveal that you're using signal, not who you're talking with nor the groups you belong to.

  • I assume I need to create an account for that and login? Why should I go through the hassle of creating an account to verify claims? These are things that should be verifiable externally without privileged access.

    And reading further, they say that after 12 months you can get the code with a BSL and then AGPL. That's great, but they say you can't publish the archive once they give it to you? That's not very AGPL. And it means that you first have to pay for a year before knowing whether their claims are valid. And that depends on you getting the code for the relevant parts of the search engine.

    It's possible they are doing what they say, but to start trusting, there has to be proof. Somehow.
