Because of the API thing. I actually wasn't aware at the time that there were actually third party clients for Reddit, but I am somewhat tech-savvy so I immediately recognized the effect that the change will have had. Also my favorite community was r/ProgrammerHumour (as it is now), and I left when they announced it will go private due to protestation for the API changes.
The prices will never go down again. There is literally no reason for the companies to decrease the prices. There will be like a 50$ decrease and people would go "oh look it's so cheap now!!1!!" and companies will keep making 3 times their profits.
