  • Oftentimes, amendments like those are proposed because they will kill the bill. If AOC wanted the bill to pass and knew that it could not pass with that amendment, then she would need to vote against the amendment even if she otherwise agrees with the content. That fact is another reason that amendments like this are suggested: they force a politician to vote against something that they otherwise support.

    So when evaluating her vote in the amendment, you need to consider the broader context of the bill that was being voted on to understand what her vote means. Was the bill as a whole worthwhile, or should she have tanked it for ideological means?

  • FYI, there is a difference between nonviolence and pacifism. Pacifism opposes violence altogether and is predicated on the idea that there is a peaceful way to settle all disputes. That is to say, it's a philosophical or ethical position. Nonviolence is a strategy to achieve your goals without employing violence. Nonviolent protesters do not take violence off the table altogether. Rather, they believe that violent actions are not as likely to achieve their goals as nonviolent action would be.

    In general, nonviolent action is taken by groups who are opposing an oppressor that has a significant power advantage over them. By resorting to violence immediately, they play into a game that they are destined to lose. Instead, they strive to use nonviolent means to make their struggle impossible to ignore. It relies on the oppressive system being vulnerable to a change in public opinion. In general, it also involves an implication that they may someday resort to violence if things do not change. That is, it differs from pacifism in that it does not deny that violence may be necessary.

    Right. And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs. So it would be interesting to check that. So, that, you're going to have to use medical doctors with. But it sounds - it sounds interesting to me. So we'll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute, that's - that's pretty powerful.

  • They're talking more about Expert Systems or Inference Engines, which were some of the earlier forms of applications used in AI research. In terms of software development, they are closer to databases than traditional software. That is, the system is built up by defining a repository of base facts and logical relationships, and the engine can use that to return answers to questions based on formal logic.

    So they are bringing this up as a good use-case for AI because it has been quite successful. The thing is that it is generally best implemented for specific domains to make it easier for experts to access information that they can properly assess. The "one tool for everything in the hands of everybody" is naturally going to be a poor path forward, but that's what modern LLMs are trying to be (at least, as far as investors are concerned).

  • Yeah, I like to think of out more as a spotlight than a mask. You're choosing which aspects of yourself to draw attention to rather than hiding yourself behind a persona.

    That is, unless we're talking about the masking that neurodivergent people talk about wherein they put conscious effort into hiding their essential nature in order to fit in.

  • In the court document, it lays out how OpenAI developed the latest model to prioritize engagement. In this case, they had a system that was consistently flagging his conversations as high risk for harm, but it didn't have any safeguards to actually end the conversation like it does when requested to generate copyrighted material.

    The complaint is ultimately saying that OpenAI should have implemented safeguards to stop the conversation when the system determined that it was high risk rather than allowing it to continue to give responses from the large language model.

  • I had an English teacher in middle school who named her son Sean, pronounced like "seen," and she always complain about how people always pronounced it like "Shawn."

    Personally, I think it's a tad rude to name your child with an uncommon spelling as it's just setting then up for a lifetime of minor annoyances. But to use a fairly common variant and insist on a non-standard pronunciation is far worse.

  • This would be called Emotional Detachment or Emotional Blunting. It is associated with several mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia, and it can be developed as a coping mechanism for a stressful or abusive childhood or past. It can also develop as a side effect for some medications, so it could be worth looking into a change in prescriptions if you think that could be relevant.

    That is to say, it is an abnormal mental state, but you are not unique in this mindset. You should strongly consider reaching out to a mental health professional to see if you can work on this as it is likely to lead to more isolation and a worsening of your overall well-being.

  • FYI, it looks like that story about the paws is false.

    The truth behind it is that there was a furry that somehow got severe frostbite when they fell asleep while icing their hands to deal with arthritis pain. After that, friends made a post trying to raise money for their medical bills, and they jokingly commented about getting him new paws. And that apparently spread elsewhere as "a furry amputated their hands to get paws."

  • She wasn't saying that water was spontaneously boiling in this chamber. She was saying that they were in a space-equivalent chamber with a pressure such that water would spontaneously boil. If you found yourself in the environment that is being simulated here (outer space), you would be able to observe water spontaneously boiling without the vacuum pumps.

  • They have performed a handful executions using nitrogen gas over the last few years in Mississippi and Alabama. From what I understand, the people have all shown signs of distress and oxygen hunger during the executions, and the autopsies show signs of distress.

    I think the pathologist that reviewed the first such execution had said that it would likely have gone better if a sedative were administered beforehand. However, I'm pretty sure that nitrogen hypoxia executions were being used because pharmaceutical companies were unwilling to provide medications for use in lethal injections, so that would likely extend to sedatives for use during executions. But in the absence of sedatives, the process is panic inducing, which causes people to resist inhaling the nitrogen, which in turn means that they are not exhaling as much carbon dioxide and thus experience the panic associated with suffocation.

    Presley had been showing signs of rebellion against Parker, and Parker believed that a stint in the Army would cure him of this. If Presley could show the world that he was treated the same as any other young man, Parker told him, then more people would accept him and his music. Parker was also afraid that any attempt to block Presley from being drafted would result in a more detailed look into Parker's own service record. He also realized that it would be an excellent opportunity to promote Presley by having the media witness his induction day, including the army haircut that would see the shearing of Presley's iconic hairstyle.

    While Presley served in West Germany, Parker appeared to be in complete control, but he was worried about the outside influences that Presley might encounter there. Parker had declined to travel to Europe to visit Presley, denying that he spoke any language other than English. He sent Presley's friends to keep him company, arranged for business associates to watch over him while working in Europe, and maintained regular contact with him. He was reportedly afraid that Presley would realize that other managers were prepared to sign contracts that did not require as much as 25% of his earnings.

  • There's no need to be fair here. Insulin is absolutely essential for diabetics, and the head of the FDA trying to proclaim that cooking classes are a viable alternative is nonsense. For type 1 diabetics, no amount of healthy eating is going to get their body to produce insulin. For type 2 diabetics, it is possible to eventually get to a point where you can be stable without insulin, but not for everybody and not right away. Insulin treatment is the only way to survive with diabetes for an extended period of time, and the focus needs to be on ensuring that insulin is both affordable and accessible.

    Yes, there are things to improve in our food supply, but don't let that distract from how egregiously insane his comments are about diabetes.

    Collins and Merriam-Webster are both American English dictionaries, and the Oxford English Dictionary is a British English dictionary.
