I'm a climate scientist by trade. Interested in interesting things. Ecology, complexity, politics, social change, music.

  • Yeah. Also AFAIK, they bombed a bunch of buildings, but only at times they knew no one would be in them, and never killed or injured anyone.

  • No idea what your dad's like, but I reckon we in the secular west are write off rituals way too easily. They can have lots of value - silly fun not least of all, but also community building and meaning-making.

  • The Luddites were a labour movement with really admirable goals. They were only anti technology because it was being used to screw over textile workers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddite

  • Yeah. It dies (more often after procreating a couple of times). Death is also useful at a species level because it makes space for new (potentially fitter) individuals

  • 100% this. "It's not what you know, it's who you know", but also, those people need to know you're interested, keen, and sufficiently capable to get started. Mentors have been very useful for me too.

  • Yeah, you're right. Minimal useful explanation is necessary. It can always be expanded later too

  • Fair enough. I guess I can see some other discoverability a related uses too (e.g. related pages on other wikis, or backlinks)

  • What has that got to do with federation though?

  • Is there a reason for it to be federated? Like, would you want to follow the change log for each page?

  • I mean, I think they also evolved on steppes and open plains, where running fast is not too often super dangerous, so breaking a leg is not common enough to counter balance the advantages of being fast.

  • What does it mean?

  • It's survival of the genetic line that reproduces enough to stay alive. The weird shit is often related to path dependence, or is just not enough of a detriment to affect evolutionary outcomes.

  • Probably worth splitting your idea of "sports" up. Perhaps "full contact" sports are to be avoided, or maybe team sport. That leaves a lot of other options.

Also, what things can you do that involve exercise that aren't sport? You could start with walking, perhaps? Then you can do as much as you're capable of and build slowly, perhaps to long hikes or to jogging.

  • Given just your comments on this thread, I think they're bang on the money. Grow up.

  • If there are clear distinctions between them, this is a good thing IMO. If I sign up for a community, I want to see content that's on topic. If I see too much unrelated stuff, I'll leave. If I want to see both types of topic, I can just join both.

  • Idk. You also gotta know that people are going to come and join in before you know it's worth the effort
