  • I'm dealing with a different field that is probably even more complex, and often overwhelming.

    I think what you probably need to focus on is not learning new information, but making sense of the information you already know (even if only partially). Understanding where you are now will help you figure out where you want to be next.

    One of the simplest tools that is effective is lists. Write lists of different types of things. E.g. things you already understand (this one is a bit of a confidence boost), things you want to learn (you could then prioritise these, and write sub lists for each one as you do it), information sources, ideas, whatever.

    Preferably use a pen and paper, because it slows you down and makes it more deliberate and considered.

    "Sense-making" is the broader set of ideas and techniques that attempt to help with this, but which ones will work for you is dependent on your domain and ways of thinking/working.

    • People are way more free to talk about their mental health problems.
    • Climate change is part of mainstream awareness, most people want to see action on it.
    • Gays and lesbians are very broadly accepted in many parts of the world. Trans people are too (and they are more visible), even if there is also a culture war backlash.
    • Nearly everyone hates capitalism. Not everyone has figured out what needs to be done about it, but it's a good start.
    • Conspiracy thinking is more rampant, presumably because of internet (mis/dis)information bubbles

    (I was born in the early 80s, so this is over the last 30ish years, since the mid 90s)

  • TBH, it's mostly the corporate control and misinformation/hype that's the problem. And the fact that they can require substantial energy use and are used for such trivial shit. And that that use is actively degrading people's capacity for critical thinking.

    ML in general can be super useful, and is an excellent tool for complex data analysis that can lead to really useful insights..

    So yeah, uh... Eat the rich? And the marketing departments. And incorporate emissions into pricing, or regulate them to the point where it only becomes viable to non-trivial use cases.

  • Fair enough. People also use the term for e.g. american fascists. I think it would be reasonable these days treat the word as if it has two meanings, one historical, and one a more general synonym for "fascist".

  • Saying "the Israeli government is acting like Nazis" is not the same thing as saying that "the current genocide being perpertrated against the Palestinians is equivalent to the Holocaust". The former sentence can be true regardless of the truth or falsity of the latter sentence.
