  • To be fair I haven't tried this even though it's what I use on my PC. I don't want to install a rolling-release because I'm not the person who will use it. Though I'll try live ISO out of curiousity.

  • Thanks for the reply! Currently it seems to be fixed with blacklisting but we'll see if there will be any issues. Someone else mentioned that Mint can install required drivers on its drivers program (by connecting the Macbook via phone tethering).

    Could you perhaps check which adapter your Macbook has? The one we have has BCM4360.

  • Is your wi-fi adapter also BCM4360? That's the one this Macbook has and no distro recognized it including Mint. Though this Macbook has i5, maybe they're kinda different?

  • Yeah, I noticed that too. Though the reason I haven't installed it was that I already installed specifically a immutable distro because of the person who will use it. However I also tried Mint as a live ISO to see if that has the driver pre-installed, it didn't. Later I thought, if this is the same proprietary driver, distro choice won't matter. Then I found about blacklisting.

  • The system has a root account but they don't allow you to use it. However there is an admin account with more privileges.

    Though it seems editing crontab will work for them, since it will be a one time thing unless they reinstall the system.

    What distro is this (based on)?

    It's based on Debian, but has its own repos only.

  • Thanks for the reply. It seems systemd-ui does not exist in the repos. I also checked some GUI programs and found Zeit, though doesn't seem actively developed. However couldn't install that either because distro maintainers removed adding third-party repos (this is a government distro on a school PC). Currently thinking about guide them for setting cronjobs. It's on terminal but it's not that hard as they may think. If the distro had KDE, they would have kcron at least. It doesn't on the repo either anyway.

  • Thanks for the suggestion, seems actually nice with all the ability to install a custom ROM. Sadly, it's not practical for me to get it from abroad because of our government's horrendous regulations about buying anything from outside of the country unless you are a trader. Even if I manage to buy it without any problems, there is also IMEI unlock fee which is almost the same price with this phone. My best bet would be, get this phone via a friend who comes from abroad and change the IMEI to my old phone. So, not soon but maybe some day.

  • Maybe not a dumb phone but I would love to use a phone with an e-ink screen. I know there are some projects about this or some Chinese phones but I haven't met an e-ink phone that I can install a custom ROM yet.
