  • I don’t think people care as much about the latest and greatest laptop as they do smartphones. That mindset about phones is also just as true with Android fanboys as it is Apple fanboys. Apple haters love to criticize when Apple does something like this but when the rest of the industry follows suit, they show us how much non-Apple users eat that shit up too.

  • That sounds like every piece of tech in existence. Every laptop manufacturer does the same. The difference with Framework is that you can upgrade parts of your existing model with some of the new hardware if you want. You don’t have to have the latest and greatest but if you like a certain aspect of it, you can upgrade that.

  • That’s true. A physical disc could also come with a requirement to contact a server in order to work and that server could be shutdown one day. I’m not saying physical media isn’t better. I strongly prefer it and hope that it sticks around. I just don’t think that’s the root of the issue.

  • Meh I love having a physical disc but digital-only is fine as long as DRM doesn’t prevent it from truly being yours and it doesn’t require an internet connection. Physical discs can be made to not work too.

  • Honestly, I’ve been taking a chance on eBay. If the price is close to $10/TB and the drive is an enterprise drive that is listed as known to be working, with a good return policy, I take the risk. I just run tests as soon as I have it so far, all have been good (eight purchases).

  • I was going to say, an old 1L ThinkCentre Tiny, Optiplex Micro, or HP Mini would fit the bill nicely. I already have one set up for retro gaming. It would be nice to get it set up as kore of an overall media center, with a remote-friendly interface. I know I can do that with Libre elec and Kodi but I’m not a fan. KDE is my desktop of choice so I’d love to see what they come up with. Plasma Mobile is solid so I would imagine it could be similar.

  • In my case, it wasn’t overheating. Drives rarely got above 75-80F. There were two large fans and plenty of ventilation to pull air through the enclosure. From what I’ve read, mostly on unRAID forums, it is USB that is the issue.
