  • When I was a kid I'd get a new stuffed animal, and somewhere on the tag it would say, "Made from all new material".

    And for some reason I thought that meant the material had just been developed or discovered. Like they had a team of scientists in a lab working on a new type of polyester just so they could use it to make this shitty stuffed lemon that I won at a church carnival.

    Thirty years later I realized it probably just meant the materials weren't recycled.

    You're right they wouldn't have accepted the results. They called her while she was taking the pregnancy test to tell her not to bother, because it wouldn't be accurate enough anyway.

    She was going to fight them on it, but the test was positive. So she just came home instead.

    Her regular doctor said she wasn't going to recommend that facility anymore, because the whole thing is fucked up regardless of the outcome.

    Even though mammograms are generally considered safe during pregnancy, her doctor just did an ultrasound instead. I believe that's because the doctor wasn't that worried about the lump, otherwise she'd have gotten the mammogram.

    I didn't mention all that other stuff in my original comment because I don't want to distract from how fucked up it is that they treated her that way. It doesn't matter whether she was actually pregnant, or even if mammograms are considered unsafe for pregnant women (and again, they're generally not). They put a hypothetical unborn child over my wife's health. It's unacceptable.

  • This is how I feel about almost every Coen brothers movie. Basic plot structure exists for a reason. That reason is because it's good, and it's satisfying, and it connects with something inside of us.

    If you have a good artistic reason to depart from the expected structure, cool, great, I hope the risk pays off. But at some point these auteur filmmakers are just being lazy because they know they can get away with it.

    Like in the Hateful Eight, when instead of revealing the twist in an organic way, within the confines of, you know, filmmaking, Tarantino just relies on blatant, unapologetic exposition. That's not clever. It's lazy.

    A good filmmaker can say what they want to say while being entertaining and making sense.

    And yeah, that's also how I feel about the Godfather. Lots of great scenes, but I didn't enjoy it as a film. A film should be more than just a loose collection of great scenes.

    Having read the version of this story that's true, there's also a lot more to it than just "buying a sign from the supplier".

    The way this is written is how I'd write it for a creative writing class. Possible I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

  • My wife was denied medical care in Texas because she might be pregnant. There was no reason to think she might be, but they still wouldn't perform her mammogram, which was scheduled to follow up on a lump she found.

    She ended up taking a pregnancy test in a Whataburger bathroom near the doctor's office. That's the state of medical care in Texas for women.

    Every attempt fails. They catch him on tape making fun of handicapped people. They bring forth credible rape allegations. They help ensure he's convicted of 34 felonies. They make sure he's clearly implicated in his attempted insurrection. But every attempt fails.

    And every time it's like, "We've got the 'grab them by the pussy' tape! Surely this will be it." Then they get back to their own time and nothing has changed.
