  • As a more concrete example for people out there. C is an example of a "high level" programming language. In C you might write a statement like "int x = 3;".

    "Assembly language" is a "human readable" representation of the instructions that are actually executed by your CPUs*. There is a different assembly language for each processor or processor family. Your desktop or laptop computer with an Intel or AMD chip, and in all likelihood execute the "x86_64" language. Meanwhile, your phone is probably on the "AArch64" language. An example of assembly language is "mov rax, #3", which loads register rax with the value 3. Notice that we have dispensed with the niceties of variable names.

    Assembly language is "assembled" into the "machine language.". To do this, the "human readable" mnemonics like "mov" are replaced with numbers called opcodes. The sequence of opcodes and arguments, like the number 3, are called the "machine code", because the CPU silicon can read those numbers from memory and follow the instructions with no additional translation steps*.

    *Microcode throws a wrench here. Folks like Intel realized they could run things more efficiently if they translated each machine language instruction into simpler microcode instructions onboard the chip.

    1. Wait for the final report on Air India before taking any regulatory decisions.
    2. There's no real technical limitation today on doing this to the safety-critical engineering standards that are demanded on the flight deck. The first CVRs were based on the old half inch tape technology, and they only recorded something like 20 minutes on a circular tape.
    3. Wait for the final report first; but exactly what additional information do you hope to get off the video feed that won't be on the CVR + FDR? I am skeptical that this accident will not be "solvable" from the information that is available.
    4. If the regulators want to fight the pilot unions on this, they can. And they can probably win. Pilots don't necessarily have a ton of leverage on this kind of issue.
  • As a country, we made a law that the ER has to treat you no matter what regardless of your financial status. That is an ultimate backstop: if people are about to die, as a society we decided that they should not if there is a means to prevent it.

    Medicaid is there to allow some people to go to regular doctors to save a couple of bucks vs. the ER. And it also pays for a lot of nursing homes.

    I guess what I'm saying here, is the headline is kinda misleading. ICE wants the data, true, so they can find deportation targets. But it's probably more about inflicting additional cruelty, forcing people to ERs instead of clinics; or cutting funding to health care providers and forcing rural hospitals to close.

  • When this country was founded, tariff revenue was enough to fund the entire federal government. Those days are long gone, and they're not coming back.

    Nowadays, there are basically two reasons to play the tariff game. 1. Extract tariff concessions from your trading partners, and 2. Encourage domestic production. The problem is, if you're going for #1, you have to be willing to drop your tariffs at the drop off a hat to make a deal. If you're playing #2, the people that build factories and whatnot want assurances that the tariff supports will be in place for years and years.

    So you can see that there's an inherent trade-off between #1 and #2. To some extent, you cannot serve both masters. But Trump has been playing both strategies at the same time without a care in the world. There are... consequences... to doing that, which I am sure we will all get to experience.

  • Exactly. This is completely insane. The DoD has the negotiating leverage to write these right to repair requirements into their RFPs, specifications, and contracts. The idea that their procurement offices simply failed to do this boggles my mind.

    Back in the war, if you had a winning design, you were required to license it, full drawings included, to many different manufacturers at fair prices. The Defense Production Act is still on the books, and it contains a lot of power to control the economy. Why is DoD handcuffing themselves?

  • Several years ago at this point, Congress passed a bill, and that bill was signed into law by the President. What that law says, is that TikTok cannot continue under Chinese ownership. Byte Dance either have to sell the American video app business so that it is controlled by Americans, or they have to shutdown Tiktok.

    Byte Dance did not sell the business, so under the law TikTok has to shutdown. This law was lawyered all the way to the supreme court, and the court said it's a valid law, and must be followed.

    Despite all of these facts, the law is not actually being followed. And Tiktok is still operating in the United States. There is no legally valid reason for it to do so. President Trump has issued extension after extension, even though he has no legal authority to do so.

    The latest here is the top law enforcement officer in the US telling the app stores, "yes we know it's illegal to keep Tiktok in your app store, but I am pinky promising we won't go after you."

  • I've done some work with near infrared spectroscopy on a similar problem to the tricorder "molecular scan.". There are two-three main problems as I see it.

    1. A typical lab spectrometer might collect on 3,000 different frequencies to cover the spectrum. Meanwhile the sensor that is cheap enough to put in a tricorder has around 10 channels.
    2. The lab instrument probably has expensive and fragile optics. You can't do the same thing on the tricorder because the optics will break when you drop it.
    3. Lab procedures rely on carefully controlling the illumination so it's the same every time. Hard to do in the field, even in relatively benign field environments. This even comes down to using sample cuvettes that are precision machined to have two sides extremely parallel. You can't make a tricorder that dispenses precision cuvettes for sample collection. If you can't control the illumination, you have to measure it and calibrate.

    Buy the best olive oil you're willing to spend money on, even for cooking.
