It's frightening that this is the state of gun ownership in the US, and that the companies making the poison are probably now also selling you the cure. But all things considering, this might actually be a useful application of the tech.
The methods of mass killing on disease detection are also quite cruel
The way these people treat humans... I doubt they care how they treat animals. I've seen enough of how the factory farming industry "cares" for animals to not want to see how they do mass cullings.
At least give it a cool name like The (John) Galt Party or something so it has a better change of splitting the right. I guess the nazi party was already taken?
There was an Italian socialist politician called Giacomo Matteotti who got disappeared after he spoke up against the fascist regime. It marks the turning point for the Italian dictatorship. If this century is truly a Disney bad reboot of the previous, we could be seeing some similarities with Mamdani.
I doubt entrenched powers would let the mayor of the biggest US city actually do anything radical like what he campaigned for. Capitalists will collaborate with politicians to either have him removed or make him woefully inefficient. It will definitely be an uphill battle.
This is exactly the dismissive attitude that has shaped Mastodon development, and why it will never have broad appeal to replace any traditional social media.
The article cites a case of online harassment from right wingers towards an immigration friendly politician that was ultimately shot. Are you seriously using this in defense of "but muh free speech?!"
"How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us?"
This is not a "pay for verification" model. Have you even read the article or anything related to it? It is literally not centralized, it's web of trust.
"Everyone should be able to setup their own domain and mess with DNS records to get a verified account"
Do you realize how utterly disconnected from reality this sounds?? Technical people that have absolutely not clue on how make good UX for end users is how we got Mastodon in the first place, and why its adoption is abysmal.
This is just a web of trust model, aka a decentralized model of verification. This thread is mostly people that haven't read the details that want to confirm that "Bluesky has been enshittified".
What are you talking about? This is a web of trust model, literally a decentralized model. Not everyone on social media needs to have technical skills to verify via DNS records, verified links etc. If you want a community that gatekeeps for for computer engineers only, you already have Mastodon.
