  • There are certainly some injuries that are survivable, and that would let a horse survive long enough to heal, if they were a creature that could heal. I assume it's that leg healing reduces their speed or endurance, or requires that they consume more calories. They put all their points into "get away from predator" and zero points into "deal with injuries". I guess as long as the average female horse has more than 2 young that survive, that's enough.

So, probably there were mutant horses that could heal a bit better, but maybe they required a bit too much food, or they were a bit slower than the other horses.

  • Horses must have plenty of good evolutionary traits, because even without human breeding they're very successful creatures. I guess they don't reproduce quickly, so that isn't it. I guess they can't shrug off injuries. They must be really good at not getting caught by predators, so they live enough to have at least a couple of foals.

  • Yeah, it's not the leg that's a finger, it's the hoof-part. The legs are legs, but instead of ending in 5 digits they end in 1.

  • They are simply incapable of bearing weight on three legs

This must mean "for an extended period of time" or something, because walking (and especially moving at any speed faster than walking) requires at a minimum that one foot be off the ground.

  • Yes, but they can get away with a tiny amount of it

Not really. Developers have forgotten how to write small, efficient code. Everything is a web page these days, and so the bare minimum app is a web browser, and a web browser is huge.

  • I've come to terms with the fact I'm not going to be buying any new computer-type devices until the bubble pops.

I'm just terrified what happens if one of my existing devices breaks. If a RAM stick goes bad, I might have to mortgage my non-existent house.

  • Even those contain RAM.

  • In that case, thank you for your service. I, for one, find overly perfumed people to be just as bad as people with bad BO. I've had to cross the street when I was outside because someone walking in front of me was leaving a cloud of perfume stench in her wake.

  • Do you ever refuse entry for someone who is completely doused in perfume? Or is it only for body odour?

  • There should be a bouncer who refuses entry to anybody who stinks.

That makes me wonder, does a bouncer at a club do that? I don't think it would come up often at a club because people who go to those try to be as appealing and attractive as possible. As a result, the bouncer is keeping out people who are badly dressed, too drunk or high, who are looking for a fight, etc. But, maybe occasionally someone is trying to seem super masculine and doesn't put on deodorant?

  • We were meant to be rugged individuals, but rugged individuals living in a community with other rugged individuals.

Also, farming has always been a hard job. People who garden are doing the kinds of farming that farmers did before automation became a thing, but they're doing it on a tiny scale. One farmer using non-industrial methods is going to have to really work like a mule to keep just themselves and their family alive. So, gardening using those same methods is never going to produce enough calories and nutrients for anything meaningful.

  • That's true, but it's also nowhere near enough to live on.

They get a huge batch of something all at once, and then it's a scramble to eat it, give it away, pickle it, can it, etc. But, the total number of calories produced throughout the season isn't enough to even keep one person alive.

  • Enshittification. They have their users locked in, and now it's about trying to make money for their advertisers.

  • There's a subreddit where there are thousands of people. The equivalent community on Lemmy has a dozen. I participate there, but it definitely isn't the same. I haven't logged into Reddit in a couple of years, and I browse that old subreddit using old.reddit if that disappears the choice is logging in or using new reddit, neither of which is going to work for me, so I guess that's it for me.

  • Sure it is, if it is dramatically revealed in the first episode.

  • Yes

  • Yeah, and he did it without needing to be the star. I'd say it was probably Katie Sackhoff who was the star, although Jamie Bamber (Apollo) was also a key actor. But, Adama glued the whole thing together.

So many of the older actors on that show were legendary though: Mary McDonnell, Michael Hogan, Donnelly Rhodes, Dean Stockwell, etc. I'm not saying that the younger actors were bad. Many, even most of them were good. It's just that Edward James Olmos or Michael Hogan could communicate so much with just a grunt.
