  • Yeah, Americans can't hold a candle to the British.

I'm with the French on this one. Let's make everything metric, including the clock and calendar.

  • damn, American units are even more complicated than I thought.

  • How bored do you have to be to submit a fix to a driver you don't personally use, which has been obsolete for 30 years?

  • I wouldn't call it fairly derived. It's all inherited from people who have stolen the land by pointing sharp sticks at its former owners. Some Brits say it's a fair amount, since supposedly the monarchy draws in more money from tourism than it costs.

No idea, really. In Germany we abolished the monarchy but let them keep their lands, so we have the worst of both worlds. And it's even worse with the church: Their real estate was nationalized in 1803, and the state agreed to pay reparations for it, perpetually. So now they get hundreds of millions of € per year from the state, and that's been going on for 223 years with no end in sight.

  • I personally don't know of any country where the royalty gets tax money directly.

    But I'm not an expert.

They do usually own lots of land which creates income that would go to the state instead, if they abolished the monarchy and nationalized their property.

  • Depends on her bun size

  • Monarchs don't just look to the next election or next year's economic growth.Their frame of reference goes back for centuries and they have a personal interest in keeping the country functional and prosperous for the next centuries.

So as long as they don't wield too much executive power that isn't democratically legitimized, they can act as a counterweight to the parliament that's often dominated by party politics.

    Stay classy, folks and folkettes.

  • That's why smart glasses with a hidden camera need to be banned by law.Or include punching people who film you as self defense, might be even more impactful.

  • My workplace has field-tested contingency plans to keep the business running when literally all IT systems and the office building are inaccessible. Which is kinda impressive for a local newspaper. The goal is mostly to prepare for a ransomware attack, but parts of it were recently needed when the power to the building went out and the cooling system for the servers failed at the same time.

For my private life, I don't care. My IT stuff is only recreationaI.I still have a radio, a DVD player, and books.

  • I wonder how many of the "refugees" have personal ties to Elon Musk and his family...

  • Shows how well they were fed.

    1. Fire half of your expensive developers
    2. Tell the other half to use LLMs
    3. LLMs are shit, so everyone now has twice the workload
    4. Re-hire developers
    5. They're forced to sign new contracts and settle for less cause the job market is flooded
    6. Profit

It was never about LLMs. It's about timing. The first companies to "pivot to AI" got more investor money, a raise in stock prices, and cheap LLM contracts initially. Now the first companies to re-hire devs get cheaper employees, before demand picks up again.

  • Yeah, that's another angle: Now that the bubble is about to pop, let's quickly tie profitability (positive and negative) to the public purse.

  • When he talks about sharing profits with "The Public", he isn't thinking of people like you and me (he never is). He's thinking about himself and his friends.

  • Behind every sign there's a story.

  • Replacing the statue of liberty with a huge golden Trump statue and putting his "They're not sending their best" quote on the plaque would be on brand.
