  • You can buy laptops and PCs with pre-installed Linux at Germany's biggest computer retailer now.

  • The old internet (small privately hosted websites and blogs, organized in web rings) still exists, and may have more content than ever. It's just such a small subset of the internet now, and gets ignored by search engines, so it's hard to find.

  • The availability of a replacement with a permissive license allows businesses to use it without giving anything back to the community. What this leads to in the long run is open source projects starved for resources, and businesses pouring their dev time only into their own business-specific forks, without sharing their code upstream.

  • You didn't state a differing opinion.You asked a loaded question, insinuating something @somegeek@programming.dev didn't say.

  • Meanwhile the German federal and local governments, police, all top politicians, communes, institutions, etc. still use X for public communication.Forcing journalists, NGOs and politically active citizens to also stay on X, in order to stay informed.

  • Have non-rich friends without it getting awkward.

  • Birdemic. It's on almost every list of "worst movies of all time", deservedly. But the enthusiasm of the people making it really shines through, even though they had zero budget or talent.

  • get shot with arramheadcan actually afford to go to the hospital now

  • What if I need to send a notarized email?

Germany actually tried to make that a thing.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De-Mail

Several aspects of the law have sparked criticism of the system.

    • Communication between De-Mail and regular email addresses is not possible.
    • End-to-end encryption is not mandatory.
    • The data provided during the identification process for the account creation is centrally stored and available to the authorities.

  • Just imagine: Spreadsheets existed before Excel.By the way, a great movie to show that type of work is The Day The Earth Caught Fire.

  • Yeah, they know that if they gave you a hard time, and you took a lawyer, they'd be in trouble.Cause that type of dark pattern is actually not allowed in Germany.

  • I've been there with my main e-mail address for the past 25 years. The catch is that their webmail page sucks monkey balls, is loaded with ads (including in your inbox), and every time you log in, they try to rope you into a paid "upgrade" using the worst UI tricks and dark patterns known to man.Their app sucks, too.

But if you use ublock to access the website and Thunderbird to access your mail, there's no issue. They make their money by exploiting tech-illiterate people who don't know how to set up an external mail client, accidentally click the upgrade button, and are too afraid to refuse paying. So in short, someone's grandma finances your email address.

  • I don't get it.

Edit: Oh, OK. It's a 5 year old reddit joke.

  • Yeah, accessibility in FOSS software really is lacking.

  • Whenever I downloaded sketchy stuff, my mom protected me with the pull-out method.

  • Those were the times, earning some pocket money by delivering email on my skeyboard. Can't count how many times I almost got run over on the information superhighway.

  • Depends on what you mean by accessibility. You can browse and post on the fediverse from any text-only browser, which makes it easy to use screen reader software and navigate it without a mouse.

  • My goal is to make it into the top 100.
