    I invite you to meet the awesome jumping spider, whose eyes are very especially needed set up to be forward-facing for depth perception for their jumps, and who hunt other spiders, as well as the wolf spider, who are also a hunting (as opposed to web) spider.

    In fact, you can use the chart of spider eye layouts to pretty much identify whether you're looking at a spider who builds webs and waits or a spider who hunts:

    Anyone with two big forward-facing eyes is probably looking around for their next meal; the rest are building a web, trapdoor, or taking some other approach.

  • I dunno, I've definitely rolled into "factory factory" codebases that are abstraction astronauts just going to town over classes that only have one real implementation over a decade and seen how far the cargo culting can go.

    It's the old saying "give a developer a tool, they'll find a way to use it." Having a distataste for mindless dogmatic application of patterns is healthy for a dev in my mind.

  • Just based on that summary, I immediately thought of the book Termination Shock, which has a similar premise of an actor beginning to geoengineer with global reprecussions - though it's heavier on the politics of the situation than any actionable info. If you haven't read it, I'd recommend. I'm definitely going to pick up Ministry For The Future.

    Damn, and here I thought I had this locked down because I was salty that so many places struggle with + in the email addy. But my god, there's comments?

  • In the beginning it screamed at me. Images loaded line by line over minutes. The most novel thing was being able to message my friends, who would make a creaking door-opening sound when they came online, and set "away" messages with in-jokes or vague angsty song lyrics. I was told not to share any personal or private information, which made discussion rooms seem like mysterious masquerade balls. I could find anything about anything if I looked hard enough, and the minutes spent waiting for replies in discussion boards where your only caché was your previous interactions on the board felt like hours.

  • After having watched it (it was good, watched it with the buddy who had the idea and without telling him why we were watching it, he had a laugh the first time it happened), if you found it a real struggle, definitely don't read this article about a real company that made a brain implant for epileptics and went under of which the episode heavily reminded me.

  • When I think of a classical instrument, I think cello - specifically this piece Shadow of Doubt by Yoko Kanno, where it has such a brooding tone and power.

    Being a synthesizer nerd, I like those most, but they have such varied tones among them and even on the same synth; 4x Atlantis by Aphex Twin probably captures one of the tones I most love, and the entire "Orphans" piece hits much of the range.

  • Lol, I want to believe it was someone who wanted to slow the spread of this concept in the world, lashing out against it the only way they could.

    That said I've def bookmarked that episode for watching. I lost track of Black MIrror, it's a bit tough in that it's so grim that each episode doesn't really leave you wanting to watch the next one in my experience. But it's had some bangers.

  • Buddy had the nightmarish idea a while back with all the new generative ai stuff for video chat services injecting ads using the faces/voices of the participants in lieu of payment. Just, regularly-schedule ad breaks in your call where "your friend" suddenly starts talking about how excited they are about Raid: Shadow Legends

  • Heck, I was salty when the old site added avatars. I already ignored names and was weirded out by "popular redditors" culture before avatars, and it was annoying to see a logo next to a name coloring my perception of the comment. I'm here to read comments, not to look at avatars
