  • Maybe someone has more history knowledge than Wikipedia in this case: Were the Young Pioneers inspired by the Scouts movement, which was startet 1908 by Baden Powell? Or more by nationalist youth groups that followed them (like the Hitler Youth in germany took the traditions of scouts and the wandervogel groups and contorted them into violent nationalism)? Is there any connection?

    Nah, often software is stupidly easy to breach. Often its an openly accessable database (like recently with the Tea app), or that you can pull other data from the webapp just by incrementing or decrementing the ID in your webrequest (that commonly happened with quite a number of digital contact tracing platforms used during Covid).

    Very often the closed source just obscures the screaming security issues.

    And yeah, there are not enough people to thorouhly audit all the open source code. But there are more people doing that, than you think. And another thing to mind is, that reporting a security problem with a software/service can get you in serious legal trouble depending on your jurisdicting - justified or not. Corporations won't hesitate to slap suit you out of existance, if they can hide the problems that way. With open source software you typically don't have any problems like this, since collaboration and transparency is more baked in into it.

  • No, I think that you have that right for every contract, that you enter (buying contract or otherwise). Though there are exceptions (for example digital goods like ebooks). Ypu can very much bring back a retail good that you bought in a store for 14 days after the purchase. Though I think they can refuse, if you damaged the product in that time.

    For example I returned an item I bought in the tool store, because I realized I bought the wrong one.

  • Eh, I'm pretty sure it is. Haven't had Kodi running for a while, but I used it on a Raspberry Pi with an USB HDD with my content long before I had Jellyfin. Though it cannot stream the content over network, just display it on the machines video output (which is what media PCs do)

  • You will have to do some work yourself (or hire someone to code the solution for you).

    If the intended use is on linux, you could also write a bash script for it. If the position in the file (as in exact number of bytes till that position) is known, then you could use dd to cut the video file in two pieces, use gpg to encrypt the second part and then probably also use dd to put both pieces together again.

    A video player like VLC should still be able to play the first part of the file (though other players might have bigger problems with such a file). To play the full file, you need to use your script to again seperate the two pieces, use gpg to decrypt the second part and put them back together.

    You can also do this in python. Doing it cross platform (Linux, Mac and Windows) will be more difficult.

  • When renovating our house we bought new room doors. Though they took weeks to be delivered and we already lived in that house without room doors (also no door for the bathroom).

    But we had loads of big cardboard pieces from furniture, so I used them and a lot of glue to build temporary doors. I added handles and used screws to fix them in the frame (I mean the big wooden beams, that are holding the actual nice doorframe in the wall).

    They mostly worked surprisingly well, holding in the frame by friction from cardboard blocks, that I glued to them. Though they opened everytime, we had an open outside door, that caught some wind

  • Sorry, you totally overestimate how loud they will sing, how much people already sitting are willing to move and underestimate how loud the surounding talking can be. If it where that easy I wouldn't ask this question here. I've often received feedback, that they really like, that I push the singing in the group, though that doesn't mean, that many people would step up and sing loud with me (at least as long as there is no huge crowd singing, or where they can just bawl instead of sing). Peoples inertia is unbelievably big. And in 2 months I will be at a camp with 120 people, so not as small as normally.

  • For a long time I was a group leader at our scouts troop, at that time for the age group of 13 to 16 years (myself being like 28 at that time). This happened on our summer camp. We had small rituals for morning and evening, just something to get the group together and starting/ending the day with everyone. As I have enough creativity to write decent short stories and the overall theme of the camp being knights and castles, I wrote a short story about the knight Kunibert, who accounts to the reader about how he slayed a dragon and rescued a maiden from it. So, what does a dragon have? Big teeth, fire breath, sharp claws,... and of course a horned tail. So I also wrote about the horned tail. But in german the word for tail is also slang for penis. While writing I really wasn't aware how it sounded. Until I read the story to the kids.

    That was a bit weird, but also fun. Next day we let the kids write the next episode of the story. They included Kunibert putting his "big horny tail" on the table at the castle, trying to brag with its size, despite it starting to stink horribly, since he didn't clean it before.

  • Hey, can you provide a source for that? I just tried to find something on wikipedia about it. While the organizational form positions DW significantly nearer to the government than the rest of german public broadcasting, it is not like the government does the journalistic work or has a direct say in it. So while a critique on DW being too close to the federal government seems fitting, calling it propaganda and the literal governments news outlet seems far fetched.
