  • well unfortunately desktop computers are kitchens, not restaurants. if you want a device purely for consumption, a pc is not the right choice.

  • is that not what taxes are? not being facetious, just genuinely trying to understand the difference

  • sorry, apple already took that one. call it Jeff or something.

  • do you think god stays in heaven because he, too, lives in fear of what he's created?

  • one method that helps is to not think of it as a workaround but as assembling a kit. the base system only comes with what everyone will need, and adding on an extra piece makes it more yours. that also helps with motivation to do a good job of it.

  • that's switchable graphics for you. nvidia refuse to spill their secret sauce so all the effort in supporting that over the past 10 years have been clean-room reverse engineering. the only way it will ever get any good is if nvidia does it, or if they open it up.

  • a beach, a plasma torch, and a very steady hand

  • maybe not lesser known but Nick Cage's real surname is Coppola. he's Francis Ford Coppola's nephew.

  • huh. wonder where i got that from then.

  • i wonder where i got the low number from then :/ can't find it now

  • is that for all languages and with history?

  • I think the full dump of wikipedia complete with multimedia is like 5 GB. the text-only version is something like 100MB.

  • personally i am a fan of "keep your religion to yourself", "don't use the veil of the church as a means to make money", "help those that others cast out, like sex workers", "don't engage in stereotype", and "rich people go to hell".

  • i have always interpreted it as you cannot block signals that will break you. like if the us military drops an emp on you, you can't design for that.

now that i type it out i realize how weird it sounds though.

  • i mean it's mostly all metaphor and allegory, meant to teach you lessons rather than to act as a historical document.

it's like a book of fables for people who think animals are silly

  • it works okay as a fuzzy search over documentation....as long as you're willing to wait....and the documentation is freely available....and doesn't contain any sensitive information....and you very specifically ask it for page references and ignore everything else it says.

so basically, it's worse than just searching for one word and pressing "next" over and over, unless you don't know what the word is.

  • Industry “conventional wisdom” often argues that FCC requirements somehow conflict with the software right to repair. SFC has long argued that's pure FUD.

i mean, it is at conflict with right to repair. having to accept harmful interference to be certified means that repairability suffers simply because the device needs to be made to break.

  • this.

tl;dr: showed up to hotel a day before their room was ready, wanted to sleep in the lobby, got abusive and violent with the staff when they refused, then accused the police of assault when they were forcibly escorted out after refusing for hours to leave.

this got attention in swedish media first, and only got a response from the ccp after it had gone viral.

  • i was there this summer! it's not this particular trunk that's 9000+ years old, but rather the entire organism. the current largest trunk is a few hundred years old, but the ground cover is older and the root system is how they figured out the total age.

fun fact, the largest organism ever recorded is also a tree. it's called pando and has 46000 stems stretching over 40ish hectares. it's basically a forest of clones.
