  • Well you should ask them. Respectfully, without interrogation, and as part of a wider conversation that overall seeks to strengthen your relationships with your neighbours. You might find there is some sense there.

I'm from the UK, not USA. But I can see why some might vote for Trump. I wouldn't, personally, because of stuff he's said, but if you accept the premise "sure he speaks crazy but what he means is [non-crazy stuff]" then maybe there is some rationale behind their choice, and you might find you're not as different as you think.

  • Well NATO works both ways, and we've seen recently what happens if russia decides to walk into a non-NATO country.

If russia walks into the USA then NATO (probably renamed to the European Defence something) will be sitting back going "hey, sucks to be you. Shame you're not in a mutual defence pact or something."

  • It works really well! I remember the last 27 places the bread was, so whenever I go in for a loaf of bread I come out with 28 items in total because I have to have at least one of everything from all the places the bread used to be! Makes for some really interesting changes to my meals too!!1!

  • There was a period some years ago where Firefox and Chrome were leapfrogging each other: Firefox would get slow and crap so I'd switch, then Chrome would get slow and crap and I'd switch back to FF, and so on. I've been on Chrome for quite a while it seems, until this development with uBO, well for me the internet is unusable without a shitblocker, so that's the end of Chrome. Thankfully FF is up to the job.

  • And my phaseout of Chrome is complete. My two browsers are now Firefox and Edge. Bit surprised at the latter tbh but it seems reasonably adequate as a secondary browser.

  • Marshmallows and gravy.

  • Yeah but those little bastards started it. People call what's happening in Gaza a genocide but that's nothing compared with the mozzie kill count.

  • Quite right too. The most important factor for me when buying a computer is that the sales droid is in an office. All those CPU, RAM and disk numbers are secondary to that.

  • A friend persuaded me to go on a date with a girl I wasn't particularly into. We went for a meal, then she wanted to go clubbing. But I'm not into that either, so she broke down in tears. I was pretty sure I hadn't said anything that bad, but then the story came out: her ex-partner had the same first name and job as me, and the meal and clubbing were his favourite things, but he'd been found dead in another country with his common law wife and kids, and the similarity to me was effectively his coming back from the dead to be with her again.

No there wasn't a second date. I haven't seen her since either. Neither have I taken dating advice off that friend since, although we are still friends.

  • Reminds me of the time I had to explain to a friend that twat was not a synonym for twit.

  • But you DO have a PhD. Claiming it is somehow not valid is a criticism of the establishment that awarded it to you. You're just suffering from impostor syndrome, that's all.

Also, no employer will consider someone fresh out of education, even someone with a PhD, to have vast quantitites of useful real-world experience, so even declaring a PhD won't see you land your first job with the expectations that you'll ace every bit of it from day one.

It's good that you realise you know nothing. That is both accurate and useful. But don't take it too far. What your PhD proves is that you have an ability to learn, understand and communicate, and THAT is what employers are looking for.

  • I have a friend who thinks LOL means "lots of love" and uses it as a generic signoff.

Had to reread it several times when he wrote "Mother in law died yesterday LOL".

  • Well, I'm not intentionally lying but I may have been misinformed. TIL, thanks.

  • Perhaps you could update the Wikipedia article with your knowledge

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Powers

"It consisted of the German Empire, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria; this was also known as the Quadruple Alliance"

  • It's not stolen. Brief history lesson:

The lands of Israel and Jordan used to be part of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans sided with the Nazis.

Brief aside: we know the Arabs believe that if you win a war, you win the land, and if you lose a war, you lose the land, because that's what they want to happen with Israel. So this principle applies to them as well.

When the Nazis lost, the Ottomans also lost, and that's where the British and French Mandates began. The land was no longer owned by the Arabs because, according to the principle they live by, they lost the war, therefore they lost the land.

The British Mandate for Palestine comprised an amount of previously Ottoman land, of which they allocated one third to the new country Israel (which includes Gaza and the West Bank), and two thirds to the new country Transjordan, later renamed Jordan. The land of Israel was not stolen by the Jews from the Arabs, it was lost by the Arabs in a war they lost. But they got two thirds of that land back, i.e. Jordan.

  • Great post. Fnrb wijjk blerb phtooie wagawaga nkkjqqz frup walawala madooie.

Edit: What do you mean you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about?

  • The worst that my country wants to do with my data is attempt to sell me shit I don't want. (OK yeah we have one or two taboos: antisemitism and actual terrorism, but that's about it.)

In some other countries, drawing parallels with certain emperors and certain A.A.Milne characters could cost me my freedom and possibly my life. Ain't nothing stopping me standing outside #10 and yelling Rishi is a wanker!

  • Has homosexuality been redefined?

I thought huddling together for warmth in cold weather was a survival technique: a method for staying alive, rather than counting as a sex act.

And two males bringing up an orphaned child seems like a jolly nice thing to do for the child and the community. If an orphanage is staffed by one sex, does that make the whole place a massive L/G orgy even if nobody is having sex with anyone else?

  • Oi I'm not wiping my manly butthole with those pink girly wipes. That'd be GAY or probably something equally incoherent.
