  • What's an online service you happily pay for?

    • Netcup (I switched from hetzner a few months ago because I found a better deal)
    • Infomaniak for domain names
    • Purelymail, a really cheap email host (I don't want to deal with self-hosting it)
    • Exoscale as an object storage provider, which I use for Lemmy and self-hosted Ente (which I chose over Immich because it supports S3 as a storage option, I don't have enough storage on my netcup server or my homelab for image backups and I'd rather not deal with the stress of a potential loss of data caused by drive failure or something) for my family
    • Threema (not really a service because it's a one time purchase, but now that we're shilling I thought I'd include it), which I also managed to get my family to buy.

  • I'd recommend Matrix. It's not perfect, but I dislike the alternatives more. Btw if you decide to give it a try, don't use matrix.org, it's too large of an instance which makes it slow and kind of ruins the decentralization aspect of it. tchncs.de seems like a good choice. I'd also love to give anyone in need of a matrix server a registration token, though registrations are not open on gregtech.eu, so contact me for a key if you'd like.

  • This is an example of survivorship bias, you only notice the cat toys because they got lost in hard-to-access places. The cat also can't get it out of there on its own, so if it gets stuck there just once, it stays there.

  • I use Cryptomator connected to an Exoscale S3 bucket. It's not particularly convenient, but it's very cheap and I use it just for photo backup anyway.
