  • It's the addiction of power. Once someone has acquired it, they can't give it up. Only exceptional people have the strength to resist and step down. Take Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had been teetering on the line between this world and the next for years, if she had retired while Obama was president, the SCOTUS wouldn't be so out of balance now. But she just couldn't do it.

  • True, look at Pelosi's choice to succeed her, Hakeem Jeffries. I thought he seemed good at first but he's turned out to be just another hand-wringing wimp. So it's not simply a matter of being too old, it's a matter of clinging to the old ways.

    edit: IOW, getting younger people in is necessary but not sufficient.

  • Point is, their big rallying cry was that people should be able make their own decision about whether to get the vaccine (or wear a mask), and now that they're in charge they're controlling what people can do, the very thing they complained about using terms like "nanny state". Some repub-controlled places are banning mask-wearing as well so expect that to go national soon.

  • And the provider giving the shots will probably make you bring paperwork stating you have whatever condition (to cover their ass), which narrows it down to those with the time and money to get it -- and I doubt insurance will be required to cover it any more, so that's another $200-300.

    But that's not even the point, since if the goal is less spreading and mutations, which means the more who get the vax the better, and that means including young and healthy. [narrator: that, of course, is not the goal]

  • Fair enough. Though I expect Mangolini will give the auto industry more breaks once they kowtow to him enough. That's what it's all about, getting people to pay up or do other "favors" for him in return for him reducing the amount of pain he's inflicting on them -- "nice business you have there, be a shame if anything happened to it".

  • I'm sure the car companies know more about how it will affect them than I do, so I believe what they say and defer to that.

    When the panel discussion I saw said the 100K cap is not an issue for the UK since they don't sell much more than that here anyway, I extrapolated that to mean it wouldn't change the status quo for the US side either, but that was just my own speculation.

  • Yes it's capped at 100,000 vehicles. I saw a British TV video panel discussion about the deal yesterday and they said that last year they had sold 102,000 here, so the deal covers almost all they would be selling here anyway. So it doesn't seem like it should affect US manufacturers much at all.

  • We do irradiate various foods, have been doing it for many years. The commenters who immediately started ranting about "how stupid we are" didn't seem to check first. I first learned that we did it with strawberries and a few other things many years ago (in the 90's maybe), but never bothered to looked up exactly what all foods we irradiate. So I don't know about alfalfa sprouts, but I suppose there are probably reasons why it's done with some things and not others, such as which ones it's safer and/or more effective on, and how it affects the quality of different foods.

    The FDA first approved the use of irradiation in 1963 to kill pests in wheat and flour.   • Except they'd probably go for a blue state in the NE so the fallout would go to Europe instead of a west coast state where red states would get the fallout. OTOH, we're starting to see that trump doesn't give a shit about red states either (cut them off from disaster funding too).
