  • Obviously never used AI. How it really goes is that you ask for a cheese pizza and after you spend hours and a bunch of money on tokens, you get an onion and peanut butter pizza with no cheese and you go, "Fuck it. Close enough."

  • I don't own a car. I ride a bicycle and take Ubers and Lyfts for long distance travel, and smart phones are like the spice mélange to those drivers. They seem to need them to navigate the Universe. So this law just seems terribly ill-conceived. The lap is just an oddly specific place to focus on. So you can set them on the dashboard, center console, or anywhere else, but the lap is the danger zone?

My main phone is a dumb phone. I hate smart phones and only got one specifically for Ubder and Lyfts, so I'm not addicted. So I'm standing outside looking in and it's a bizarre law. Sure, we don't want people playing Angry Birds while driving, but I don't think this is a well thought out solution that does anything at all except cause more chaos and suffering.

  • I've been trying to wrap my mind around the logic of this law and this was one of the things I considered they must be worried about. It's not so much people using them, it's just they don't want them in the lap. Because Uber and Lyft drivers have to use them for work in the US. Here they have they often have a mount on the dash board to hold their phone and they're constantly taking calls and checking maps.

As you say though it's like a one in a million event freak accident if it flies off the lap and gets stuck under the pedal. It would be weird to pass a law for some off the wall scenario like that.

  • These are cargo cult laws. They don't understand what the original laws were about. They just know "use phone in car bad" but they don't know why. Used to you had to hold the phone to your head and block half of your vision.

  • That logic can be applied to anywhere in the car that the driver can reach. Is the Australian government suffering a collective stroke? Should we send help?

  • How would it be hard to enforce? You can see it next their head.

  • Why is it illegal to have a phone in your lap? That doesn't make sense. That's bizarre.

    Edit:

Really? This is a hot take? WTF!

  • I do wear my seat belt. I don't have a choice. It's illegal not to. And you need to not worry so dang much. The laws are carpet bomb laws. When dealing with hundreds of millions of people, it saves lives. But you personally, it has no effect except you trying to convince me that an SUV can pop out from behind a bush any second now and murder me if it sees me not wearing a seat belt.

  • But you are stroking out in fear and don't know it. There is a downside. What people back in the time before mass shootings and road rage called fender benders, you consider proof that you need to be prepared for death every time you get behind the wheel. If you drive like a grandma, the most that is going to happen to you is someone accidentally bumping into your car occasionally.

  • You’re proving my point. You’re worried about something that’s just not going to happen to you. I can safely make a $500 bet with 4,000 people in the US that if they don’t wear their seat belt that they will be alive a year from now and be $1,999,500 richer. It’s not psychologically healthy to constantly worry about this, strapped into a bucket seat by a 3 point safety harness, like you’re an astronaut riding an SLS rocket to the Moon when you’re only driving down the road to buy a gallon of milk.

And what I mean by saying that people shouldn’t wear seat belts unless they need to, does not mean go fumbling for your seat belt in the middle of an emergency situation. It means when you know you are about to be in a dangerous situation that requires one, like riding with someone who you know is a horrible driver. Or that famous scene in Bullitt where Bullitt and the villains buckle up before their big car chase, jumping the hills of San Francisco. Today we buckle up like we’re about to get into a wild car chase when we’re just going around the corner to McDonald’s. That’s making everyone neurotic.

  • People shouldn’t wear seat belts unless they need to. Constantly being hypervigilant, prepared for the worst case scenario, thinking you have zero control over whether you get in a deadly accident is bad for the psychological health of our society.

Before seat belt laws there wasn’t even a word for road rage. It didn’t exist because when someone accidentally swerved into your lane or cut you off it didn’t feel like attempted murder.

In 1971, it was hold me close tiny dancer and count the lights on the highway. Today it’s stay over there tiny dancer and stay strapped into your bucket seat just on the off chance we get into a horrible accident. We’re driving ourselves batty with this kind of paranoia.

  • They were probably expecting Walmart cashiers to use it to find out why their family members in Medieval 2 Total War aren't having children instead of doctors using it to find out how to perform an open heart surgery.

  • Flip Normals has changed names so many times in the past decade that I have no idea what it's called today or what it was called before and I'm starting to suspect it's in the witness protection agency.

I feel bad for newcomers because you just have to use the Force a lot of times when using Blender.

  • My point is that if everyone is grabbing their pitchforks and planning to kill all the Lilliputians in town and they all wrongly think you're a Lilliputian, you want to address that first before joining the mob because they're coming for you too.

  • First of all, Don’t blatantly lie about the very thing you are linking to. It is not listed as social media.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media#Decentralization_and_open_standards

"While the dominant social media platforms are not interoperable, open source protocols such as ActivityPub have been adopted by platforms such as Mastodon, GNU social, Diaspora, and Friendica. They operate as a loose federation of mostly volunteer-operated servers, called the Fediverse."

The problem isn't me wrongly referring to Lemmy and Reddit and other forums as social media. The problem is pretty much the entire world doing it. So until that gets fixed, it's probably best not to call for the destruction of social media.

  • It can't do art or writing either. It's like a genius suffering from the advanced stages of Mad Cow Disease. You have to badger it for hours and lower your expectations before it produces something acceptable.

  • That's the problem with this panic. Everybody is using a different definition of social media. You and the other guy don't hate social media, you hate Meta, X, and TikTok. And the government hates that too but also defines the Fediverse and forums in general, plus video games and anywhere else you might talk to another human being as social media as well.

So if you're on a social media site like Lemmy or Piefed and you're complaining about how evil and addictive social media is, the government is going to read that and think "My god! This poor person is in trouble! They're screaming for my help! I must pass a law to ban Lemmy and liberate Derpgon from they're horrible addiction to the Fediverse! That's what Derpgon wants!"

  • Lemmy and the whole Fediverse is social media. What do you think social media is?
