  • I needed a quick python script for something simple. Gemini put type annotations everywhere. I told him they were unnecessary for such a small, one-off script and it shouldn't use type annotations during this session. It said "I'm sorry but it is best practice.   • Am I doing something wrong? All my services are grouped in docker compose files. Containers that have to communicate internally - a server and it's db for example - are on their own private docker network. A reverse proxy has its ports 80 and 443 open and it is on an external docker network. Services that I need to access from the outside are on this network and they do not have any ports open. Except for the torrent client, which has a UDP port open.

    A division of AppleComputer started having developers report LinesOfCode written as a ProductivityMetric. The guru, BillAtkinson, happened to be refactoring and tuning a graphics library at the time, and ended up with a six-fold speedup and a much smaller library.   • The only way I can see forward is regulation. Antitrust laws have been suspended for too long. They have to be enforced, and interoperable standards must be fiercely enforced, without loopholes, without exceptions. If leaving Facebook for another social media platform does not have to mean you'll lose all your connections, thanks to interoperable standards, it will be easier for people to ditch them and harder for them to become monopolies.

  • If I have a lot of rich friends who need IT support and I get exclusive deals with them, making it impossible for experts like you to get freelance deals, and practically force you to work for me for a wage, that's capitalism. I don't know anything about IT. I get all the contracts thanks to my connections. You do the job and get a fraction of what you would have gotten if you were able to freelance.

    I worked as a conference interpreter and it works exactly like that. We cannot directly contact the clients. There are a few interpreter offices. Clients call them, they call us. They get half the payment for playing telephone.
