  • I was looking at simple 2 bay home NAS and Synology was - quite logically - one of the contenders. Now I'm glad I ordered differently. Went with Asustor AS5402, which might be not as polished package as a Synology option, but they're very open about it and say it's just regular PC so you can instal e.g. TrueNAS if you want. This openness convinced me.

  • Try to get ryzen 5600, it's pretty good and goes cheap. 5500 should be mostly fine too, but it's a little gimped on cache compared to 5600. Avoid cpus with G at the end, you don't want/need to pay for integrated graphics.

    Second thing would be graphics card. Try to find used radeon 5700, 6600 or something similar. They will be faster and won't be as power hungry = you won't need new power supply.

    Also bigger ssd. Doesn't need to be nvme, but having spinning drive for software is a pain these days. Sata SSD is fine.

  • Well, how's it supported? This is usually what kills these phones. Even brand like Xiaomi dump their non-flagship model really soon. I have one, bought as a new model, was officially supported for like a year. Great.

  • How do you guys find new books?

  • It never really crossed my mind there's even a possibility to not having something to read. Thinking about it a bit more, I see few reasons for my immediate thought.

    First I'm quite slow reader myself. I read rougly 10 books a year so I don't burn through as many books as some other more avid readers.

    Second I read mostly SF/F and there's just so many good books and series for people interested in this genre. And while not everything is perfect, I'm probably much more tolerant to some imperfections as a genre fan.

    Third, I read in my (non english) native tongue and while we're definitely limited in quantity, it's usually a bit of a filter so most of bad and trash books are excluded. Who would pay to translate and print shitty book anyway?

    We have two good local sites that helps. One is basically like "local goodreads", the other is strictly SF/F fansite. Both have user ratings and reviews which help a lot. Also my best friend has similar taste in books, so we often recommend our findings to each other.

  • I tried it once years back. Thought it's weird, but gave it a try anyway. Now I can't use "stupid" default launchers and KISS is first thing to set up in new phone :-D

  • If I was alone, this would be an option. With family, not so much. I've heard horrible stories, struggling to go uphill with 4 people on board, etc. And I live in a hilly area.

  • It's a cool car, yes. Too small for me, but cool as fuck. Used ones are affordable, but it's still 34k € new, which is not cheap at all.

  • It depends... As our old Ford gave up, I bought used car at the end of 2023. It is Kia Ceed SW, was three and a half years old when I bought it and I paid roughly 14k € for it, which is about my ceiling for a car. Not that I couldn't pay more, but I don't want to as our family doesn't drive that much. Our last car did about 5-10k km a year and this one is no different.

    When I was checking BEV at the time there was nothing usable at my price range and area. Couple of used E-Ups, which are too small honestly (that's why we bought SW, trunk is always full of something). Same goes for BMW i3, which is also so hideous my wife said it would be a divorce. Not many E-Golfs, most of them totally abused, and way older than I'd like. Few Renault Zoes, but that's a brand I wouldn't trust with my past experience... There was simply nothing that would make sense. Not sure how it changed during 2024, but my hopes are low.

  • Gimme cheap, simple and reliable EV with guaranteed 200km range and I'm sold. I don't need bazillion of cameras inside and out, I don't need glass roof, I don't need 200kW of ridiculous power I would never use, I don't need always online maps for a subscription fee and I don't need 20" infotainment, neither I need 3 zone AC with ventilated seats and ballsack massage device, etc. I just want a Dacia of EV market.
