I'd appreciate it if everyone could just stop burning fossil fuels, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Rust-coreutils may eventually become a suitable replacement for coreutils but it hasn't yet existed for long enough to iron out all the bugs and there's no real advantage to using it right now.

The idea is that Rust will make everything easier to maintain and improve in the long run, or something like that. It's somewhat plausible, but it's not totally obvious whether that will prove correct. So it's easy to suspect that there must be some other unstated motivations behind it, although to me there don't appear to be any in view.

  • There may be something relevant in wikipedia's list of propaganda techniques but I think the mostly it's just what is technically called "lying."

  • There's no time for profits. AI investors don't want boring old companies that make tools which do useful things and earn revenue — they want maximum investment into the most expensive AI techniques possible where they feel like there's a chance that all their money might cause AI to reach critical mass and then shower them with riches beyond what pre-AI people can even imagine.

  • For maximum jobbotunities change your name to Max Power.

  • You can easily identify lemmy users by looking at their profile page, which you'll find a link to in all their posts and comments. For example I am called @kbal@fedia.io or something like that.

    1. Links to news stories from...
    2. ...credible sources, with...
    3. ...their original headlines, that...
    4. ...would make people who see the headline think, “That has got to be a story from The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.”

Given what passes for "news" some of the time I suppose you might find some better-conceived piece about poo-flinging in e.g. The Guardian, but personally I think rule 2 is where we run into real problems here.

  • There's some small chance that this is not machine-generated slop, but it's still not Not The Onion material.

  • Sometimes I wonder about which stereotypes I'm resembling, for example when I'm wearing a plaid shirt and cutting down trees with an axe. But that normally only happens two or three times a year.

  • It's possible to read your comment as an attempt to perpetuate the bullshit while pretending to counter it. Be careful about over-generalizing and holding up the worst members of a group and claiming that they're typical of everyone in that group — whether it's Israeli people, Jewish people, or leftists on Lemmy.

  • Youngest: A mayfly, born this morning and destined to die this evening, which landed on my nose.

Oldest: A mountain with ancient bones, eroded by the aeons to a mere hill with sides of crumbling rock.

Oh you mean humans? Well, anyone between the ages of 47 and 52 I guess.

  • If disk space is a problem, why don't more instances delete old stuff? 99% of what's posted doesn't need to be archived forever.

  • Okay great, but steam engines from the mid 19th century could probably outrun humans too.

  • Basically all of them, but in particular, and I can't believe nobody's mentioned it yet, Ben Hur (1959). And lest anyone doubt that it couldn't be made today, we have the 2016 attempt at a Ben-Hur movie as evidence that it couldn't be done then.

  • If they make the fediverse illegal, then it will be illegal. There's not much that can be done about it. Obviously we cannot do "age verification."

It would look really bad, politically, so they probably won't go that far right now — they'll just slowly push things in that direction until it seems feasible.

  • Saying "on the count of three" before you start counting is optimal, in timelines where that tradition is widely known. It's more words the first time but many people need the time provided by saying them to mentally prepare, and then if you need repeated counts no such preparation is necessary and each one takes only three beats.

  • Encouraging more teen pregnancies seems like it might cause problems for the education system, but that's okay; Fox News loves the uneducated.

Personally I suspect that the best cure for a low fertility rate is a good 60 to 100 years of declining population size. It's worth a try anyway.

  • It was a while ago so they might've fixed it by now, but I remember the problem being that notifications didn't always come through.

  • In favour of whatsapp:

    • You've already got it installed

    Against whatsapp:

    • It's one of those tech platforms owned by and run for the benefit of evil billionaires
    • The source code isn't available, so nobody really knows if it's secure at all
    • The metadata probably all just quietly flows into the Facebook data maelstrom
    • It never worked properly on my android phone that doesn't have Google services
    • It differs from Signal only in ways that make it worse
