I'd appreciate it if everyone could just stop burning fossil fuels, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Good luck finding someone to explain why an entire thread of hundreds of comments exclusively about hating on Catholics suggests the presence of objectionable religious prejudice.

  • I normally react by ignoring it until it goes away. Doesn't work for everyone of course, but if you only started getting it a few days ago there's some chance that it might work for you.

  • If you change the question to "please demonstrate why social media was a bad idea" you got some great answers in this thread.

  • There are of course many good reasons to disapprove of the church. People with some passing knowledge of them often feel inclined to take advantage of every opportunity to show it off, despite their total ignorance of every other aspect of the faith and its history.

Religious prejudice will presumably continue to be a popular pastime for the next millennium as it has been for the last few.

  • Holy shit that's the one. For a minute there I wondered if I had just imagined the whole thing.

  • The efficient market hypothesis.

  • I just checked, and it is apparently called "Default".

  • In 1980s Canada there was a brief period of official enthusiasm for physical fitness branded as "Participaction" and not only did they measure the weight and height of all the elementary school kids, they also tested us to see how far we could long jump, how fast we could run, how long we could hang from a bar, and probably other things I've forgotten. I was pretty good at hanging from a bar.

  • I was surprised as well. I found the instructions at debian.org somewhat confusing, and I'm not sure if they're completely comprehensive or accurate — but they were the most useful reference I found and provide a good idea of what it's like.

  • Coincidentally, today I removed systemd from my laptop (Debian Trixie.) It was reasonably easy. I booted from a USB drive into a shell through debian's "rescue" mode and typed plausible-looking apt commands until it worked. For some reason it didn't create /etc/inittab and I made a typo when I tried to do it myself, but other than that no problems. Differences noticed so far that a normal user would care about: none. If nothing goes wrong I guess I'll do the same on my desktop at home this weekend, because why not.

Nothing against systemd, but I think it's valuable to continue having other options and it was fun to see that it's still pretty easy to use them (maybe harder if you're a GNOME user, idk.)

  • Of all the accounts I ever noticed it's got to be George Takei.

  • Personally identifying information here, but I don't mind telling you all that my exact time of birth was 1970-01-01-00:00:00.000000.

  • A very popular one. I didn't name it since I don't want to offend its fans when I've only seen like half of one episode and may have been too hasty to judge it. But I just don't like that style where it's all about explaining everything completely as it happens and then wallowing in emotional vibes.

  • Where do you draw the line between green and salty? There isn't a line between them, they're two different dimensions.

  • There's other social media?

I guess there's also IRC, matrix, and individual forums here and there but it seems like fedi is an easier habit to get into.

  • to be watched while scrolling the phone

That perfectly explains what was going on with the very popular show (nothing to do with Trek) I just tried watching. I thought TV audiences were getting amazingly stupid, but I guess they're just distracted.

  • Your instance is literally called "dot world"

  • If you mean right now, yes code reviews are still a thing.[*] More so than ever, really. If you mean some hypothetical future age, yes code reviews will still be a thing.

[*] Among people who know what they're doing.

  • Yikes. I was imagining they were only trying to trick people into using their phones that could be tracked (in addition to jumping through arbitrarily placed hoops in the traditional captcha style) not that they were actually requiring a phone running Google spyware. That's insane.

  • As we know, only humans are capable of reading QR codes.
