I'd appreciate it if everyone could just stop burning fossil fuels, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

  • Should your private messages and group chats be public information?

    No.

Is it reasonable to hold individuals accountable for statements made that they thought were in private?

    Yes.

  • Not bad considering it's only been around for a couple of years.

  • It's a condition under which the inequality tends to grow, and one reason why it grows more when economic growth is less. The consequences that follow from it do involve instability that would do damage your investment portfolio and given the current situation could well lead to total collapse. Not today perhaps, but certainly within 500 years.

  • Well maybe it's too boring and obvious, but... Seize the means of production, distribute equal shares of its ownership to everyone, design a democratic process to decide what should come next.

  • This pyramid scheme is unlikely to last for 500 years.

  • VCRs. I predict that everyone will instead watch movies transmitted via satellite directly into the brain.

  • The usual trio of lemmy, piefed, and mbin does have some problems, but to the best of my knowledge there isn't any real alternative available right now if you want something that works approximately like this. What are you going to do, use billionaire-owned corporate social media? Lemmy is at least better than that.

  • 10% creating bugs, 90% fixing bugs.

  • Hooba-dooba-dooba!

  • The massive wave of people trying to forge birth certificates saying they're already 51 and therefore exempt would overwhelm all remaining faith in official documents and government would become impossible.

  • I was a car guy, more or less. I enjoyed driving them, I enjoyed tinkering with them. I like going fast, I like shifting gears. I did some incredibly cool road trips, I did some autocross, I did some commercial driving too and enjoyed the challenge of finding the most efficient routes across the city.

But there are too many cars on the road, designing our cities around them was a potentially civilization-ending mistake, and we should all stop burning fossil fuels like right now and also stop spreading microplastics, oil, and road salt all over the land. There are better ways to commute. These days I'm more of a "fuck cars" guy.

  • I got to install Mint for a couple of people, which was fun. Haven't done much of that since the heyday of the Linux User Group circa 2002.

  • Interesting news, but I'll just stick with F-Droid.

  • As someone long accustomed to ISP bills that say little more than "you owe us $60 this month for 1 Internet" I'm finding it hard to imagine what is going on over there.

  • It seems possible that there might be better ways to ride a hot waterbed.

  • I like the A Fire Upon The Deep version where Earth is in the "slow zone" but the speed limit gets faster in other regions of space. It makes enough sense that you could easily imagine a universe working that way, at least if you don't know too much about physics.

  • All you need to do is say "AI" enough times.

  • Sure, these days people only use Windows because they feel like they're stuck with it. It's a pretty old meme, just not quite as old as the "mac vs. pc" thing.
