  • Neat. But it's not pre social media. Social media has been around since the 1980s.

    The fediverse has become the central hub for it all due to its nature. Any forums or whatever which want to join in and be a part of it are free to do so. It could perhaps be made easier, but that depends on the technical details of the protocols involved which are still hard to understand.

  • Hopefully it won't matter too much in practical terms. More distributions have lately started using very new kernel versions and substantial numbers of people might therefore be hit by it. But the volume of patches to amdgpu is so high that I have no idea if whatever the problem might be was fixed already by someone. If it was as obvious to others as it seemed to me then it should very likely be fixed for 7.2.1.

  • If you have a patch to fix it the lkml or whichever related list is devoted to amdgpu would probably like to hear from you, otherwise I'm not sure — possibly the freedesktop issues page would be appropriate.

    I'm still not yet sure if people other than me are affected, but I guess so? If it's still there in a couple of weeks maybe I'll find the strength to do some more testing.

  • rc7 was the final release candidate build for 7.2, the seventh in the usual series of them. They're meant to fix bugs, not introduce new ones. I often run them, for fun and testing. One expects bugs like this — assuming it is a bug — in the rc builds but normally they're meant to be fixed before the final release which happened this week.

    Switching back to a working kernel is what I did for today, yeah. I have no particular reason to need 7.2 right now and don't have time to try and track down the bug.

    Don't get me wrong, I welcome this policy, I just wish the "one line zinger" was a little more detailed, because if you come away from the article without reading on (or, more realistically, if secondary sources pick up this quote without the surrounding context), one could easily get a wrong idea.

  • The policy summarizes itself this way: It's fine to use LLMs to answer questions, analyze, distill, refine, check, suggest, review. But not to create.

    Saying that "it's fine" seems a little overly broad, because sometimes it isn't, but I suppose that by "fine" they simply mean that it's not forbidden by the policy. A more complete summary would also mention that where it is allowed, disclosure of LLM use is required.

    Personally, on the few occasions where I've resorted to querying an LLM it's been very much the same kind of experience that using Stack Overflow used to be. It's a quick way to see one way that other people have done some thing, but you wouldn't want to rely on it being the right way.

  • People were complaining about .ml long before I thought it was justified, but I looked again recently and yeah, maybe. This instance doesn't federate with it so I don't see it often. Based on my quick impressions the other day it's gotten worse. Not that it's an "echo chamber" and I don't mind hanging out with communists, but there's too much low-quality noise.

    Personally I wouldn't block the whole server if it were up to me. There are still good people there. Just be quick to block the people and posts you really object to.

  • Normally I get around it by using Tor browser which works 95% of the time since it's a totally normal-looking web browser — but here they've got the settings turned up so high that not even that works. It's unusual enough that it probably wasn't an accident, so telling them about it probably won't help.
