Yeah, the "platonic ideal downvote" is only supposed to be used for content that "doesn't contribute to the conversation" or whatever, but that is very often just not the case. There's even research on how downvotes easily lead to a bandwagon effect: here's a blog post on this, based on a research article.

But why is saying this out loud such a taboo? I regularly get downvoted to hell for saying that there's a real danger the midterms might get rigged in some states. Or is the problem – like one commenter seemed to imply – pointing it out but not coming up with concrete ideas on how to fix it?
Holy crap that's even worse than I thought. I tried making an account just to check it out myself even though I'm not at all interested in the service itself, but their email verification emails just never come through even though I tried several times (I'm using Proton, and no they didn't end up in spam). Seems like I'm much better off, never having to come into contact with… that.
So this isn't even a "from the frying pan into a slightly cooler frying pan" situation, but more like "from the frying pan into the open core of a nuclear reactor". I wouldn't be surprised if this even further radicalises Americans
