  • If you use your TV's smart functions, it's shipping everything you watch, apps you use, and how you do it to their parent companies. There's even some circumstantial evidence that they're monitoring the room and mapping your network, IIRC Vizio was involved in that or maybe LG. The price race to the bottom is to lock up data sharing contracts that pay as much or better than they're discounting the hardware for.

  • Dead simple, same as the update process, just a bigger download. I've never used the Gnome spin, but the KDE spin hasn't given me a problem in the last couple years.

  • Remote (VNC/RDP) support from startup

    That is huge.

  • Did Polymarket grow a sense of ethics?

    Can't see that happening.

  • I have 54 solar panels that are 1x2m apiece (108m2 total), and they generate barely enough to keep my house running in the winter, and have to be supplemented by a generator in the winter for December and January since it's entirely offgrid.

I don't think a couple panels on a balcony are doing much more than charging a couple phones.

  • Made perfect sense to me. Messing with how edge routers would talk to upstream pipes would indicate some attack.

  • It might be all the racism. But what do I know.

  • IKR, wow, 32 GB of DDR5 ram (at today's prices) being run by a gerbil wheel.

  • I stood in one place for 3 hours while they meditated and stopped thinking so the time would go by quickly until they were done and we could go for lunch. Not sure what they were trying to accomplish in that time.

  • Stop trying to make Copilot a thing.

It's never going to be a thing.

Burning a billion dollar brand on the AI altar.

  • The older I get, the more I realize that opening up makes things worse.

  • You can trust the Americans to always do the right thing.

After they've tried literally everything else first.

  • I've installed wayland based DEs on all sorts of cheap-shit, 2013 era hardware and never have a problem. IDK what sort of janky crap it takes to have to run X11 still. A 90s SpeakNSpell?

  • If you get a camera that is ONVIF compatible, you won't need an app to set it up. Vikylin, amcrest are a couple I've used.

Use tailscale to access your cameras, don't portforward them. They are pathetically terrible for security.

  • Jeffgeerling.com has been Migrated to Hugo

  • It's damn fast.

  • Pick a well supported distro like Fedora or Ubuntu and you're more likely to have less problems with things like that, because if the devs are testing against anything, those will be the distros.

  • Not sure what effort this would save other than creating a "To Be Triaged" category in Issues and filtering it from issues tools.

  • Apparently I must work for System76

  • iOS? Definitely.
